The Experiment's Liberal Grading Criteria

There were concerns that the strict grading criteria would inflate the number of violations, as many of them were intended to be heuristics. Following the initial strict judging, liberal grading was used. Additional judges decided whether each violation was actually important. Importance was defined as “likely to disrupt the comprehension or memory of the material.” If it wasn’t, then the researchers rejected that initial classification of a violation for the liberal categorization.
