The Four Pillars of the Abdal in Jami's Haft Awrang (Section 117)

In Section 117 of Subhat al-Abrar (within the Haft Awrang), Jami outlines the spiritual framework of the four pillars (arkan) essential for reaching the station of the Abdal (the substitute saints). These pillars are:

  1. Seclusion (عزلت - Uzlat): Physical and spiritual withdrawal from worldly distractions to focus entirely on the Divine.
  2. Silence / Health (صمت/صحت - Samt/Sehat): Guarding speech against idle or harmful words, thereby cultivating internal quietude.
  3. Hunger (جوع - Jo'e): Abstaining from excessive consumption to weaken physical desires and discipline the lower self (nafs).
  4. Wakefulness (سهر - Sahar): Engaging in night vigils and sleeplessness, which Jami elaborates on in Section 145 as the fourth pillar of saintship.

According to Sufi doctrine as presented by Jami, constant devotion to these four spiritual disciplines is the path through which the spiritual elite transcend their worldly limitations.
