English translation

The exemplar of gnostics in the secret of spiritual journey, The pole of Truth, the author of the Fusus al-Hikam [Ibn Arabi], May Allah sanctify his most pure secret, And guide us to His most complete justice, Has narrated from the tongue of a trustworthy person, An authority in the accounts of the people of the heart: That one night, within a special seclusion, I was free from the talk of people. The door of the house was closed to this one and that one, And I was seated upon my prayer rug. The eye of my soul was witnessing the Witness of the Unseen, Withdrawing my feet into my skirt and my head into my cloak. Suddenly, someone came inside and snatched away The prayer rug that was beneath my feet. He threw down one or two yards of a straw mat beneath me, Saying: 'Do not approve of any prayer rug other than this.' From him a fear arose in my heart, For the door of my dwelling was locked. He said, 'O simple one, what is the fear for? The knower of God fears no one.' Then he said: 'Fear Allah, the Exalted, In all matters and circumstances.' He was of the Abdal, and at that moment, it was cast into my heart By the Inspirer of righteousness and guidance, That I should ask him by way of inquiry: 'For what reason have the Abdal become the Abdal?' He said: 'By those four famous qualities, Which have been written in the Qut al-Qulub: Seclusion, silence, hunger, and wakefulness; These are the main qualities and ways of life.' He said this and resolved to depart, Leaving the door closed and the straw mat in its place. It went beyond the capacity of human minds to understand How that exit and entrance occurred. If you say it was the manifestation of spirits And not the transformation of physical bodies, This comes from the power and capability of the perfect ones, Who can become detached from this physical frame, And, like angels, by stripping off and putting on forms, Manifest themselves in another place; I would say: yes, but with this explanation, The transport of the straw mat cannot be accounted for. It is a dense, dark physical body; It is not something subtle and spiritual. How could it undergo manifestation So that the problem could be solved by that statement? If you say that the perfect ones have Power from God over the existence of things, Perhaps by the power of creation, He gave it the description of existence inside the house; It had no existence outside the house, But its existence was added inside the house. I would say: this is not completely rejected, But it is extremely improbable and far-fetched. For whatever the perfect one creates, If he becomes heedless of it for a single moment, It would step out of the arena of existence And carry the baggage of its being to the street of nonexistence. It is not fitting that the perfect one, from all directions, Should turn his attention toward a straw mat, Never turning his face away from it for lifetimes, And never closing the eye of his spiritual resolve from it, So that for a long, extended period, You may perform your prayers upon it. If you say it is fitting for the possessor of spiritual vision To transport it by new creation— To snatch its existence from the outside, And recreate its likeness on the inside; The throne of Bilqis and its transport from Sheba— Thus spoke the wise gnostic: In Sheba, Asif annihilated it, And gave it the name of existence in another place. Otherwise, traversing a month's journey in a single instant Is beyond the realm of possibility, Since the movement of a body and physical things Is a gradual matter, not instantaneous. I would say: this explanation is very sound and strong, Even though it is beyond the limit of the imagination of the astray. Yet the work of God and the chosen of God Is not restricted to our comprehensions. Many a work comes from the Abdal Which seems impossible to the intellect of people, But it is from the powerful and capable Creator That their work transcends human capabilities. Whatever your understanding is deficient in grasping, Do not deny it out of foolishness. Whatever your intellect inclines toward, Do not remove it from the limit of possibility. The meaning of impossibility and possibility Is hidden from most intellects. How often you are a believer and convinced That this is impossible and that is possible! But relative to the power of the Maker, Neither of those is a constraint. Until you practice the path of the Abdal, How will you know the reality of this state? Practice seclusion, silence, hunger, and little sleep, So that you may find their station. The explanation of seclusion and its secrets has passed, And there is no need to repeat it. Now hear the discourse on the other three pillars; Cease denial, and believe in it.
