The Impossibility of Union and Ultimate Sacrifice in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 31, Poem 70)
In Chapter 31, Poem 70 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet explores the profound suffering and ultimate sacrifice inherent in the path of divine love. The poem vividly depicts the heart paying 'a thousand souls as a penalty' and the body yielding to the 'torment of the abyss of separation.' Realizing that achieving union with the Divine is impossible, the lover's heart turns to blood and surrenders its life with 'a hundred thousand lamentations.' This illustrates the Sufi concept that true love demands the complete annihilation of the self, especially in the face of the eternal and unbridgeable gap between the finite lover and the infinite Beloved.
