In this anecdote from Elahi-Nameh, Attar of Nishapur uses the Sufi master Abu al-Hasan al-Akkafi's explanation of the Prophet's Ascension (Mi'raj) to illustrate the critical relationship between exoteric religious law (Sharia) and esoteric truth (Haqiqah). Akkafi explains that although the Prophet reached the ultimate placeless station (la-makan) of divine unity, he maintained silence regarding the absolute reality and emphasized Sharia. Attar asserts that strict adherence to the Sharia is the essential prerequisite for becoming a 'possessor of secrets' and attaining divine vision. Furthermore, he emphasizes the spiritual pedagogy of caution: esoteric secrets must be disclosed only in proportion to the seeker's individual capacity, as revealing them prematurely can overwhelm or mislead.
