The Irrelevance of Paradise Without the Divine Vision in Attar's Asrar Nameh
In this tale from Attar's Asrar Nameh, a captive who is being dragged to Hell declares that physical and spiritual sufferings are secondary to the absence of the Divine. The captive asserts that without the vision of the Beloved (God), they have no desire for their own eyes, heart, or soul, and that even Paradise would be unbearable if it served as a veil separating them from the Divine. This narrative illustrates a central Sufi theme: true lovers of God seek only the Beloved, completely transcending the desire for heavenly rewards or the fear of hellish punishments.
