The Literalist Objection to the Prenatal Prostration in the Masnavi

In Book 2 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the poet introduces a literalist objection to the preceding narrative of John the Baptist's prenatal prostration to Jesus. Rumi observes that those he terms 'fools' will dismiss the miraculous tale as a lie based on physical constraints and historical tradition. These critics argue that Mary isolated herself far from her kin and the city during her pregnancy, only returning to her people after giving birth to Jesus. Consequently, they question how the mother of John (Yahya) could have possibly encountered Mary to witness or discuss the unborn infants' spiritual interaction. By presenting this materialistic skepticism, Rumi highlights the inherent conflict between worldly logic and divine reality, setting the stage to defend spiritual perception that transcends spatial and temporal limitations.
