The Metaphor of Jesus and the Donkey in Attar's Asrar Nameh
In Section 12 of Farid al-Din Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet uses the contrasting figures of Jesus and his donkey to distinguish between physical sight (چشم سر, the eye of the head) and spiritual insight (چشم دل, the eye of the heart). While both Jesus and his donkey possess physical eyes capable of seeing the material world, only Jesus possesses the awakened eye of the heart required to perceive divine truths and the hidden treasure (گنج پنهان) of God's essence. This metaphor underscores the Sufi teaching that true knowledge of God cannot be attained through bodily senses or intellect alone, but requires the cultivation of an inner spiritual vision.
