The Metaphor of Khidr and Moses in the Dervish's Apology
In Book Two, Section 103 of the Masnavi, Rumi compares the Dervish's responses to the Shaykh with the wisdom of Khidr answering the questions of Moses (referred to in the poem as Kalim, meaning the one who spoke to God). Just as Khidr possessed divine, esoteric knowledge that resolved Moses's bewilderment regarding seemingly irrational acts, the Dervish offers profound insights that resolve the Shaykh's inquiries. This comparison elevates the Dervish from a mere disciple to a vessel of divine wisdom, highlighting the Sufi teaching that true spiritual understanding often transcends outward appearances and conventional logic.
