The Metaphor of Non-Being as the Mirror of Being in Golshan-e Raz
In Mahmud Shabestari's Golshan-e Raz, Section 8 introduces the philosophical metaphor of non-being (adam) as the absolute mirror of Being (Hasti). Shabestari explains that just as one cannot look directly at the blinding sun but can safely view its reflection in water, the absolute Divine Truth is too intense to be perceived directly by the intellect. Therefore, non-being serves as the reflective surface or mirror in which the radiance of Divine Being manifests. This paradox illustrates how the multiplicity of the phenomenal universe arises purely as a reflection of the singular Divine Light in the mirror of non-existence.
