The Metaphor of Sand and the Mountain in Attar's 19th Discourse

In Section 1 of the 19th Discourse of the Asrar Nameh, Attar employs the metaphor of accumulating grains of sand to illustrate the spiritual danger of minor vices and worldly attachments. He lists negative traits such as pride, lust, anger, falsehood, and greed as individual grains of sand. If left unchecked, these seemingly small, isolated sins amass into a crushing, fiery mountain that weighs down the soul and becomes its own hell. This passage serves as a spiritual warning to the seeker to shed worldly impurities grain by grain before they become an insurmountable burden.
