The Metaphor of the Drop and the Ocean in Attar's Tale of Abu Sa'id Abu'l-Khayr
In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the narrative centers on the teachings of the famous Sufi mystic Abu Sa'id Abu'l-Khayr. The poem explores the spiritual concept of fana (annihilation of the self) through the metaphor of a water drop merging into the ocean. Abu Sa'id describes his long search for the truth, concluding that upon finding what he sought, his individual self became completely lost, much like a drop losing its distinct identity when it falls into the vast sea. This passage illustrates the Sufi teaching that ultimate realization requires the total dissolution of the individual ego into the Divine mystery.
