The Metaphor of the Forward-Thinking Bird and the Ocean of Unity in Attar's Khosrow Nameh

In the introductory verses of Section 52 of the Khosrow Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar uses the metaphor of the 'forward-thinking bird' (morgh-e pish-andish) to represent the human soul. The material world is described as a 'foreign land' (gharibestan) and a 'shroud of dust' (qaba-ye khak) unsuitable for the soul's celestial nature. Attar exhorts the soul to stop gathering worldly debris and instead dive into the depths of the ocean of divine Unity (Tawhid). By submerging itself in this ocean and achieving spiritual self-annihilation (Fana), the soul transforms into a pearl of divine wisdom, gaining an illuminated perspective that transcends earthly existence.
