The Metaphor of the Narrow House (خانه تنگ) and Divine Awareness in the Masnavi
In Book 4, Section 8 of the Masnavi, the Sufi responds to his wife's deceptive claims of piety by referencing their 'narrow house' (خانه تنگ) where not even a needle can be hidden. Allegorically, this narrow house represents the inescapable reality of divine omniscience and the spiritual insight of the awakened. The Sufi's 'covert' (سرپوشیده) reply signifies that outward hypocrisy and false claims of virtue (such as the wife's feigned modesty) cannot be concealed from those who possess true spiritual vision, just as a hidden lover cannot be ignored in a cramped physical room.
