دفتر چهارم - بخش ۸ - گفتن زن کی او در بند جهاز نیست مراد او ستر و صلاحست و جواب گفتن صوفی این را سرپوشیده / Book Four - Section 8 - The woman saying that she is not bound by a dowry, her desire is modesty and righteousness, and the Sufi answering this covertly

گفت گفتم من چنین عذری و او
گفت نه من نیستم اسباب جو

ما ز مال و زر ملول و تخمه‌ایم
ما به حرص و جمع نه چون عامه‌ایم

قصد ما سترست و پاکی و صلاح
در دو عالم خود بدان باشد فلاح

باز صوفی عذر درویشی بگفت
و آن مکرر کرد تا نبود نهفت

گفت زن من هم مکرر کرده‌ام
بی‌جهازی را مقرر کرده‌ام

اعتقاد اوست راسختر ز کوه
که ز صد فقرش نمی‌آید شکوه

او همی‌گوید مرادم عفتست
از شما مقصود صدق و همتست

گفت صوفی خود جهاز و مال ما
دید و می‌بیند هویدا و خفا

خانهٔ تنگی مقام یک تنی
که درو پنهان نماند سوزنی

باز ستر و پاکی و زهد و صلاح
او ز ما به داند اندر انتصاح

به ز ما می‌داند او احوال ستر
وز پس و پیش و سر و دنبال ستر

ظاهرا او بی‌جهاز و خادمست
وز صلاح و ستر او خود عالمست

شرح مستوری ز بابا شرط نیست
چون برو پیدا چو روز روشنیست

این حکایت را بدان گفتم که تا
لاف کم بافی چو رسوا شد خطا

مر ترا ای هم به دعوی مستزاد
این بدستت اجتهاد و اعتقاد

چون زن صوفی تو خاین بوده‌ای
دام مکر اندر دغا بگشوده‌ای

که ز هر ناشسته رویی کپ زنی
شرم داری وز خدای خویش نی

English translation

He said: "I offered such an excuse, and she\nSaid: 'No — I am not one who seeks material goods.\nWe are wearied and surfeited with wealth and gold;\nWe are not like common folk in greed and accumulation.\nOur purpose is modesty, purity, and righteousness —\nIn both worlds, salvation indeed lies in these.'"\n\nAgain the Sufi spoke the plea of poverty\nAnd repeated it so that nothing remained concealed.\n\nThe woman said: "I too have repeatedly said the same;\nI have confirmed the absence of a dowry.\nHer conviction is firmer than a mountain —\nFrom a hundred hardships of poverty not a complaint arises from her.\nShe keeps saying: 'My desire is chastity;\nWhat I seek from you is sincerity and resolve.'"\n\nThe Sufi said: "She has seen, and continues to see,\nOur dowry and possessions — what is manifest and what is hidden.\nA cramped house, a one-person dwelling,\nIn which not even a needle could remain hidden.\nAs for modesty, purity, asceticism, and righteousness —\nShe knows us better than we know ourselves in sincere counsel.\nShe knows the conditions of our modesty better than we do,\nAnd the fore and aft, the head and tail of modesty.\nOutwardly, he is without means and servant,\nAnd of his righteousness and modesty she herself is fully aware.\nExplaining modesty by the father is not required,\nSince to her it is as plain as bright daylight."\n\nI told this tale so that\nYou weave fewer boasts when your fault is exposed.\nO you who are likewise excessive in claims —\nSuch ijtihad and conviction is at your disposal.\nLike the Sufi's wife, you have been treacherous;\nYou have laid the snare of deceit and fraud.\nFor from every brazen face you make your advances —\nYou have shame before men but not before your own God.
