آن امیران عرب گرد آمدند
نزد پیغامبر منازع می‌شدند

که تو میری هر یک از ما هم امیر
بخش کن این ملک و بخش خود بگیر

هر یکی در بخش خود انصاف‌جو
تو ز بخش ما دو دست خود بشو

گفت میری مر مرا حق داده است
سروری و امر مطلق داده است

کین قران احمدست و دور او
هین بگیرید امر او را اتقوا

قوم گفتندش که ما هم زان قضا
حاکمیم و داد امیریمان خدا

گفت لیکن مر مرا حق ملک داد
مر شما را عاریه از بهر زاد

میری من تا قیامت باقیست
میری عاریتی خواهد شکست

قوم گفتند ای امیر افزون مگو
چیست حجت بر فزون‌جویی تو

در زمان ابری برآمد ز امر مر
سیل آمد گشت آن اطراف پر

رو به شهر آورد سیل بس مهیب
اهل شهر افغان‌کنان جمله رعیب

گفت پیغامبر که وقت امتحان
آمد اکنون تا گمارد گردد عیان

هر امیری نیزهٔ خود در فکند
تا شود در امتحان آن سیل‌بند

پس قضیب انداخت در وی مصطفی
آن قضیب معجز فرمان روا

نیزه‌ها را هم‌چو خاشاکی ربود
آب تیز سیل پرجوش عنود

نیزه‌ها گم گشت جمله و آن قضیب
بر سر آب ایستاده چون رقیب

ز اهتمام آن قضیب آن سیل زفت
روبگردانید و آن سیلاب رفت

چون بدیدند از وی آن امر عظیم
پس مقر گشتند آن میران ز بیم

جز سه کس که حقد ایشان چیره بود
ساحرش گفتند و کاهی از جحود

ملک بر بسته چنان باشد ضعیف
ملک بر رسته چنین باشد شریف

نیزه‌ها را گر ندیدی با قضیب
نامشان بین نام او بین این نجیب

نامشان را سیل تیز مرگ برد
نام او و دولت تیزش نمرد

پنج نوبت می‌زنندش بر دوام
هم‌چنین هر روز تا روز قیام

گر ترا عقلست کردم لطفها
ور خری آورده‌ام خر را عصا

آنچنان زین آخرت بیرون کنم
کز عصا گوش و سرت پر خون کنم

اندرین آخر خران و مردمان
می‌نیابند از جفای تو امان

نک عصا آورده‌ام بهر ادب
هر خری را کو نباشد مستحب

اژدهایی می‌شود در قهر تو
که اژدهایی گشته‌ای در فعل و خو

اژدهای کوهیی تو بی‌امان
لیک بنگر اژدهای آسمان

این عصا از دوزخ آمد چاشنی
که هلا بگریز اندر روشنی

ورنه در مانی تو در دندان من
مخلصت نبود ز در بندان من

این عصایی بود این دم اژدهاست
تا نگویی دوزخ یزدان کجاست

English translation

Those Arab amirs gathered together, disputing before the Prophet: "You are an amir; each one of us is also an amir — divide this dominion and take your share. Each of us seeks justice in his own portion; wash your hands of our portion."

He said: "God has given me the emirate, has given me lordship and absolute command — for this is the age of Ahmad and his cycle. Come, take hold of his command; fear God."

The people said to him: "We too, by that decree, are rulers, and God granted us the emirate."

He said: "But God gave me a permanent dominion; yours He gave on loan, for provision. My emirate endures until the Resurrection; a borrowed emirate will break."

The people said: "O amir, speak no more excess — what is your proof for this claim of superiority?"

At once, by divine command, a cloud arose; a flood came and filled all those surroundings.

The flood, most fearsome, turned toward the city; the people of the city, all crying out, were terrified.

The Prophet said: "The time of trial has come now, so that rank may become manifest.

Let every amir cast his spear into it, so that in the trial that flood may be dammed."

Then Mustafā cast his staff into it — that miraculous, command-ruling staff.

The swift, surging, obstinate floodwater swept the spears away like straws.

The spears all vanished, but that staff stood upon the water's surface like a sentinel.

Through the authority of that staff, the mighty flood turned its face away and the torrent departed.

When they saw that great miracle from him, those amirs then submitted out of fear —

Except three persons whose malice prevailed; out of denial they called him a sorcerer and a soothsayer.

A dominion that is bound-off is so feeble; a dominion that has grown free is so noble.

If you did not see the spears alongside the staff, look at their names, look at his name — see this noble one.

The swift flood of death carried away their names; his name and his swift fortune did not die.

Five times daily they beat his drum without cease, and so it shall be every day until the Day of Resurrection.

If you have reason, I have shown you favors; if you are a donkey, I have brought the donkey a rod.

I will drive you from this stable in such a way that from the rod your ears and head are filled with blood.

In this stable, donkeys and people alike find no refuge from your cruelty.

Look — I have brought the rod for discipline, for every donkey that is not well-disposed.

It becomes a dragon in its wrath against you, for you have become a dragon in deed and nature.

You are a relentless mountain dragon, but look at the dragon of heaven.

This rod came as a foretaste from Hell — flee, then, into the light!

Otherwise you will remain caught in my teeth; you will find no release from my prison-gate.

This was a rod — now it is a dragon, so that you may not say: where is God's Hell?
