گفت موسی ای خداوند حساب
نقش کردی باز چون کردی خراب

نر و ماده نقش کردی جان‌فزا
وانگهان ویران کنی این را چرا

گفت حق دانم که این پرسش ترا
نیست از انکار و غفلت وز هوا

ورنه تادیب و عتابت کردمی
بهر این پرسش ترا آزردمی

لیک می‌خواهی که در افعال ما
باز جویی حکمت و سر بقا

تا از آن واقف کنی مر عام را
پخته گردانی بدین هر خام را

قاصدا سایل شدی در کاشفی
بر عوام ار چه که تو زان واقفی

زآنک نیم علم آمد این سؤال
هر برونی را نباشد آن مجال

هم سؤال از علم خیزد هم جواب
هم‌چنانک خار و گل از خاک و آب

هم ضلال از علم خیزد هم هدی
هم‌چنانک تلخ و شیرین از ندا

ز آشنایی خیزد این بغض و ولا
وز غذای خویش بود سقم و قوی

مستفید اعجمی شد آن کلیم
تا عجمیان را کند زین سر علیم

ما هم از وی اعجمی سازیم خویش
پاسخش آریم چون بیگانه پیش

خرفروشان خصم یکدیگر شدند
تا کلید قفل آن عقد آمدند

پس بفرمودش خدا ای ذولباب
چون بپرسیدی بیا بشنو جواب

موسیا تخمی بکار اندر زمین
تا تو خود هم وا دهی انصاف این

چونک موسی کشت و شد کشتش تمام
خوشه‌هااش یافت خوبی و نظام

داس بگرفت و مر آن را می‌برید
پس ندا از غیب در گوشش رسید

که چرا کشتی کنی و پروری
چون کمالی یافت آن را می‌بری

گفت یا رب زان کنم ویران و پست
که درینجا دانه هست و کاه هست

دانه لایق نیست درانبار کاه
کاه در انبار گندم هم تباه

نیست حکمت این دو را آمیختن
فرق واجب می‌کند در بیختن

گفت این دانش تو از کی یافتی
که به دانش بیدری بر ساختی

گفت تمییزم تو دادی ای خدا
گفت پس تمییز چون نبود مرا

در خلایق روحهای پاک هست
روحهای تیرهٔ گلناک هست

این صدفها نیست در یک مرتبه
در یکی درست و در دیگر شبه

واجبست اظهار این نیک و تباه
هم‌چنانک اظهار گندمها ز کاه

بهر اظهارست این خلق جهان
تا نماند گنج حکمتها نهان

کنت کنزا کنت مخفیا شنو
جوهر خود گم مکن اظهار شو

English translation

Book Four — Section 115 — Moses (peace be upon him) demanding of God: "You created a creation and destroyed them," and the answer coming

Moses said: "O Lord of reckoning, You fashioned forms — then why did You ruin them?

Male and female You created, soul-nourishing — Then why do You destroy these forms?"

The Truth said: "I know that this question of yours Is not from denial, heedlessness, or desire.

Otherwise I would have chastised and rebuked you; For this question I would have caused you pain.

But you wish, in Our actions, To seek out the wisdom and the secret of endurance,

So that you may make the common folk aware of it, And by this ripen every raw one.

Purposely you became a questioner in unveiling, For the masses — though you yourself are already aware.

For this question is half of knowledge — Not every outsider possesses that opening.

Both question and answer arise from knowledge, Just as thorn and rose arise from earth and water.

Both straying and guidance arise from knowledge, Just as bitter and sweet arise from the call.

From familiarity arise both enmity and love; From one's own nourishment come both sickness and strength.

That Interlocutor made himself a benefiting stranger That he might make strangers learned in this secret.

We too shall make ourselves strangers before him; We shall bring the answer as if before an unfamiliar one.

Donkey-sellers became adversaries to one another Until they became the key to the lock of that knot.

Then God commanded him: "O possessor of the kernel, Since you have asked, come now and hear the answer.

O Moses, sow a seed in the earth, That you yourself may render justice on this matter."

When Moses sowed and his crop was complete, His ears of grain attained goodness and order.

He took the sickle and was cutting them; Then a call from the unseen reached his ear:

"Why do you cultivate and nurture a crop, Then when it has reached perfection, cut it down?"

He said: "O Lord, I destroy and lay it low Because here there is grain and here there is straw.

The grain is not fit to be in the straw-barn, And straw in the wheat-barn is also ruined.

It is not wisdom to mix these two — Difference demands separation in the sifting."

He said: "This knowledge — from whom did you receive it, That through knowledge you erected this wakefulness?"

He said: "You gave me this discernment, O God." He said: "Then how would discernment not be in Me?

Among creatures there are pure souls, And there are murky, clay-stained souls.

These shells are not all on one level: In one is genuine pearl, in another a counterfeit.

The manifestation of this good and corrupt is necessary, Just as the manifestation of wheat from straw.

For the sake of manifestation is this creation of the world, That the treasure of wisdoms may not remain hidden.

Hear: Kuntu kanzan, kuntu makhfīyan — Do not lose your own essence; become manifest."
