دفتر چهارم - بخش ۹۳ - بیان آنک تن خاکی آدمی هم‌چون آهن نیکو جوهر قابل آینه شدن است تا درو هم در دنیا بهشت و دوزخ و قیامت و غیر آن معاینه بنماید نه بر طریق خیال / Book Four - Section 93 - Explaining that the earthly body of man, like iron of good essence, is capable of becoming a mirror, so that even in this world Paradise, Hell, Resurrection, and other than that may be witnessed within it clearly, not by way of imagination

پس چو آهن گرچه تیره‌هیکلی
صیقلی کن صیقلی کن صیقلی

تا دلت آیینه گردد پر صور
اندرو هر سو ملیحی سیمبر

آهن ار چه تیره و بی‌نور بود
صیقلی آن تیرگی از وی زدود

صیقلی دید آهن و خوش کرد رو
تا که صورتها توان دید اندرو

گر تن خاکی غلیظ و تیره است
صیقلش کن زانک صیقل گیره است

تا درو اشکال غیبی رو دهد
عکس حوری و ملک در وی جهد

صیقل عقلت بدان دادست حق
که بدو روشن شود دل را ورق

صیقلی را بسته‌ای ای بی‌نماز
وآن هوا را کرده‌ای دو دست باز

گر هوا را بند بنهاده شود
صیقلی را دست بگشاده شود

آهنی که آیینه غیبی بدی
جمله صورتها درو مرسل شدی

تیره کردی زنگ دادی در نهاد
این بود یسعون فی الارض الفساد

تاکنون کردی چنین اکنون مکن
تیره کردی آب را افزون مکن

بر مشوران تا شود این آب صاف
واندرو بین ماه و اختر در طواف

زانک مردم هست هم‌چون آب جو
چون شود تیره نبینی قعر او

قعر جو پر گوهرست و پر ز در
هین مکن تیره که هست او صاف حر

جان مردم هست مانند هوا
چون بگرد آمیخت شد پردهٔ سما

مانع آید او ز دید آفتاب
چونک گردش رفت شد صافی و ناب

با کمال تیرگی حق واقعات
می‌نمودت تا روی راه نجات

English translation

So, like iron, though dark of form, Polish, polish, polish!

So that your heart becomes a mirror full of forms, Within it, on every side, a silver-bodied beauty.

Though iron was dark and without light, Polishing wiped that darkness away from it.

Iron experienced the polishing and made its face fair, So that forms can be seen within it.

If the earthly body is coarse and dark, Polish it, for it is capable of taking polish.

So that unseen forms (ashkāl-i ghayb) may reveal themselves in it, The reflection of ḥūrī and angel leaps within it.

God gave you intellect as a polish, So that by it the page of the heart may be illumined.

You have bound the polishing, O prayerless one (bī-namāz), And set both hands free for caprice (hawā).

If caprice were bound, The hands of polishing would be freed.

The iron that was a mirror of the Unseen — All forms would be sent forth within it.

You darkened it, gave it rust within its nature — This is: "They strive upon the earth to spread corruption" (yasʿawna fī'l-arḍi'l-fasād).

You have done thus until now — do so no more; You have muddied the water — add no more to it.

Do not stir it, so that this water becomes clear, And see within it the moon and stars in their circuit.

For the human being is like the water of a stream — When it becomes turbid, you cannot see its depths.

The depths of the stream are full of jewels and pearls — Beware, do not muddy it, for it is pure and free (ḥurr).

The soul of a person is like the air (hawā) — When mixed with dust it became a veil over the sky.

It becomes an obstruction to seeing the sun, But when the dust departed, it became clear and pure.

Even in the fullness of your darkness, God was showing you True visions (wāqiʿāt), so that you might find the path of salvation.
