The Tale of the Preacher Who Prayed for the Wicked in the Masnavi

In Book 4 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the story of a preacher who exclusively prays for highway robbers and the corrupt illustrates the paradoxical spiritual value of suffering and adversity. When questioned about his unorthodox prayers, the preacher explains that the cruelty and oppression of the wicked repeatedly drove him away from worldly attachments, forcing him to seek refuge in God. Rumi uses this narrative to teach that an enemy who causes you pain acts as a spiritual medicine and alchemy, pushing you toward divine grace. Conversely, worldly friends who distract you from God are your true enemies. Rumi likens the believer's soul to an ashghar, an animal that grows robust from being beaten, emphasizing that prophets and saints endure the greatest tribulations to achieve profound spiritual strength.
