ملک برهم زن تو ادهم‌وار زود
تا بیابی هم‌چو او ملک خلود

خفته بود آن شه شبانه بر سریر
حارسان بر بام اندر دار و گیر

قصد شه از حارسان آن هم نبود
که کند زان دفع دزدان و رنود

او همی دانست که آن کو عادلست
فارغست از واقعه آمن دلست

عدل باشد پاسبان گامها
نه به شب چوبک‌زنان بر بامها

لیک بد مقصودش از بانگ رباب
هم‌چو مشتاقان خیال آن خطاب

نالهٔ سرنا و تهدید دهل
چیزکی ماند بدان ناقور کل

پس حکیمان گفته‌اند این لحنها
از دوار چرخ بگرفتیم ما

بانگ گردشهای چرخست این که خلق
می‌سرایندش به طنبور و به حلق

مؤمنان گویند که آثار بهشت
نغز گردانید هر آواز زشت

ما همه اجزای آدم بوده‌ایم
در بهشت آن لحنها بشنوده‌ایم

گرچه بر ما ریخت آب و گل شکی
یادمان آمد از آنها چیزکی

لیک چون آمیخت با خاک کرب
کی دهند این زیر و آن بم آن طرب

آب چون آمیخت با بول و کمیز
گشت ز آمیزش مزاجش تلخ و تیز

چیزکی از آب هستش در جسد
بول گیرش آتشی را می‌کشد

گر نجس شد آب این طبعش بماند
که آتش غم را به طبع خود نشاند

پس غدای عاشقان آمد سماع
که درو باشد خیال اجتماع

قوتی گیرد خیالات ضمیر
بلک صورت گردد از بانگ و صفیر

آتش عشق از نواها گشت تیز
آن چنان که آتش آن جوزریز

English translation

Overturn your kingdom swiftly, like Adham, So that you may find, like him, the kingdom of eternity. That king was sleeping at night upon his throne, While the guards on the roof were busy in their commotion. The king's intent from the guards was not That they should drive away thieves and rogues. He knew that whoever is just Is free from misfortune, secure in heart. Justice is the guardian of one's steps, Not the night watchmen beating clubs on the rooftops. But his purpose from the sound of the rabāb Was — like the yearning ones — the imagining of that divine address. The wailing of the surnā and the threatening of the drum Bear some resemblance to that universal trumpet. Thus the sages have said: these melodies We have taken from the revolution of the celestial sphere. This is the sound of the turnings of the heavens that people Sing with the tambūr and with their throats. The believers say that the traces of Paradise Made beautiful every ugly sound. We were all parts of Adam; In Paradise we heard those melodies. Although water and clay of doubt were poured over us, We remembered something of those melodies. But when it mixed with the soil of grief, How can this treble and that bass give that joy? When water mixes with urine and excrement, From the mixing its temperament becomes bitter and harsh. There is something of water in the body — The urine of it extinguishes a fire. Though the water became impure, this nature remained in it: That by its own nature it settles the fire of grief. Thus samā' has become the food of lovers, For in it is the imagining of union. The imaginations of the inner heart gain strength, Indeed they take form from sound and melody. The fire of love was sharpened by the melodies, Just as the fire of that walnut-roaster.
