مشورت می‌کرد شخصی با کسی
کز تردد وا ردهد وز محبسی

گفت ای خوش‌نام غیر من بجو
ماجرای مشورت با او بگو

من عدوم مر ترا با من مپیچ
نبود از رای عدو پیروز هیچ

رو کسی جو که ترا او هست دوست
دوست بهر دوست لاشک خیرجوست

من عدوم چاره نبود کز منی
کژ روم با تو نمایم دشمنی

حارسی از گرگ جستن شرط نیست
جستن از غیر محل ناجستنیست

من ترا بی‌هیچ شکی دشمنم
من ترا کی ره نمایم ره زنم

هر که باشد همنشین دوستان
هست در گلخن میان بوستان

هر که با دشمن نشیند در زمن
هست او در بوستان در گولخن

دوست را مازار از ما و منت
تا نگردد دوست خصم و دشمنت

خیر کن با خلق بهر ایزدت
یا برای راحت جان خودت

تا هماره دوست بینی در نظر
در دلت ناید ز کین ناخوش صور

چونک کردی دشمنی پرهیز کن
مشورت با یار مهرانگیز کن

گفت می‌دانم ترا ای بوالحسن
که توی دیرینه دشمن‌دار من

لیک مرد عاقلی و معنوی
عقل تو نگذاردت که کژ روی

طبع خواهد تا کشد از خصم کین
عقل بر نفس است بند آهنین

آید و منعش کند وا داردش
عقل چون شحنه‌ست در نیک و بدش

عقل ایمانی چو شحنهٔ عادلست
پاسبان و حاکم شهر دلست

هم‌چو گربه باشد او بیدارهوش
دزد در سوراخ ماند هم‌چو موش

در هر آنجا که برآرد موش دست
نیست گربه یا که نقش گربه است

گربهٔ چه شیر شیرافکن بود
عقل ایمانی که اندر تن بود

غرهٔ او حاکم درندگان
نعرهٔ او مانع چرندگان

شهر پر دزدست و پر جامه‌کنی
خواه شحنه باش گو و خواه نی

English translation

A certain person was seeking counsel from someone, to be freed from hesitation and from confinement.

He said: O good-named one, seek someone other than me; tell your matter of consultation to that one.

I am your enemy — do not entangle yourself with me; no one ever triumphs through an enemy's counsel.

Go, seek one who is your friend; a friend, for a friend, is doubtlessly a seeker of good.

I am your enemy — there is no remedy, for I am what I am; I will go crookedly with you and show you hostility.

It is not proper to seek a guard from a wolf; seeking from the wrong place is the same as not seeking.

I am, without any doubt, your enemy; how could I show you the way? I am a highwayman to you.

Whoever is a companion of friends is in the furnace-room as if in the midst of a garden.

Whoever sits with an enemy in this world is in the garden as if in a furnace-room.

Do not injure your friend through ego and self-regard, lest your friend become your adversary and enemy.

Do good to people for the sake of your God, or for the comfort of your own soul,

So that you may always see friends before your eyes, and no ugly images from hatred may enter your heart.

Since you have made enmity, be on guard against it; seek counsel with a love-inspiring companion.

He said: I know you, O Abū'l-Ḥasan, that you are my long-standing bearer of enmity.

But you are a man of reason and of the spiritual realm; your intellect will not allow you to go crookedly.

Nature desires to draw vengeance from the adversary; intellect is an iron chain upon the nafs.

It comes and restrains it, holds it back; intellect is like a shaḥna in its good and evil.

The intellect of faith is like a just shaḥna; it is the guardian and ruler of the city of the heart.

Like a cat, it is alert in its awareness; the thief remains in the hole like a mouse.

Wherever a mouse extends its hand to act, there is no cat, or there is only the image of a cat.

What a cat — nay, a lion, a lion-toppler — is the intellect of faith that dwells within the body!

Its growl is the ruler of predators; its roar is a barrier to grazers.

The city is full of thieves and garment-strippers; whether you are a shaḥna, say so, or whether not.
