English translation

The army of the corporeal ones launched an attack Toward the fortress and stronghold of the spiritual ones,

To seize and block the gateway of the Unseen, That no pure-pocketed one may come from that side.

When the warriors of holy war carry out fewer attacks, The unbelievers launch their attacks in reverse.

When the warriors of the Unseen, out of their own forbearance, Did not launch an attack upon you, O evil-natured one,

You launched an attack upon the gateways of the Unseen, So that the men of the Unseen would not come to this side.

You clutched at loins and wombs, So as to seize the thoroughfare through wickedness.

How do you seize the royal road that the Lord of Majesty Has opened for the purpose of the descent of souls?

You have become a dam blocking the gateways, O obstinate one; Your blindness made you a commander of rebellion.

Lo, I am the commander — I shall shatter your army; Lo, by His Name, I shall shatter your name and your shame.

Come now, bind the gateways tight; For a while, laugh at your own mustache.

Destiny will pluck your mustache out, hair by hair, So that you may know: "al-qadar yaʿmā al-ḥaẕar" [destiny blinds precaution].

Is your mustache sharper than that of ʿĀd, Whose very breath made cities tremble?

Are you more contentious than Thamūd, Whose like has never come into existence?

If I speak a hundred such things, you are deaf; You hear and yet pretend you have not heard.

I repent of the speech I have stirred up; Without words, I have already mixed your remedy —

That I may lay it on your raw wound so it may ripen, Or burn your wound and your root forever.

So that you may know He is the All-Aware, O enemy — He gives to each thing its fitting portion.

When did you do wrong, and when did you do evil, That you did not see its fitting consequence in the aftermath?

When did you send a breath toward Heaven — A goodness — whose like did not come after it?

If you are watchful and awake, You will see at every moment the response to your deeds.

When you are watchful and seize the rope, You will have no need for the Day of Resurrection to come.

One who truly understands a symbol Has no need that it be spoken to him plainly.

This affliction comes to you from dullness — That you did not understand the subtleties and symbols.

When the heart has grown black and dark from wickedness, Understand: here one must not be bewildered.

Otherwise that very darkness will become an arrow, And the punishment for impudence will strike you.

And if the arrow does not come, it is from mercy — Not because the defilement has gone unseen.

Heed! Be watchful, if you desire a heart, For after every act, something will be born to you.

And if your aspiration is greater than this, The work will rise above mere watchfulness.
