بو مسیلم گفت خود من احمدم
دین احمد را به فن برهم زدم

بو مسیلم را بگو کم کن بطر
غرهٔ اول مشو آخر نگر

این قلاوزی مکن از حرص جمع
پس‌روی کن تا رود در پیش شمع

شمع مقصد را نماید هم‌چو ماه
کین طرف دانه‌ست یا خود دامگاه

گر بخواهی ور نخواهی با چراغ
دیده گردد نقش باز و نقش زاغ

ورنه این زاغان دغل افروختند
بانگ بازان سپید آموختند

بانگ هدهد گر بیاموزد فتی
راز هدهد کو و پیغام سبا

بانگ بر رسته ز بر بسته بدان
تاج شاهان را ز تاج هدهدان

حرف درویشان و نکتهٔ عارفان
بسته‌اند این بی‌حیایان بر زبان

هر هلاک امت پیشین که بود
زانک چندل را گمان بردند عود

بودشان تمییز کان مظهر کند
لیک حرص و آز کور و کر کند

کوری کوران ز رحمت دور نیست
کوری حرص است که آن معذور نیست

چارمیخ شه ز رحمت دور نی
چار میخ حاسدی مغفور نی

ماهیا آخر نگر بنگر بشست
بدگلویی چشم آخربینت بست

با دو دیده اول و آخر ببین
هین مباش اعور چو ابلیس لعین

اعور آن باشد که حالی دید و بس
چون بهایم بی‌خبر از بازپس

چون دو چشم گاو در جرم تلف
هم‌چو یک چشمست کش نبود شرف

نصف قیمت ارزد آن دو چشم او
که دو چشمش راست مسند چشم تو

ور کنی یک چشم آدم‌زاده‌ای
نصف قیمت لایقست از جاده‌ای

زانک چشم آدمی تنها به خود
بی دو چشم یار کاری می‌کند

چشم خر چون اولش بی آخرست
گر دو چشمش هست حکمش اعورست

این سخن پایان ندارد وان خفیف
می‌نویسد رقعه در طمع رغیف

English translation

Musaylima said: "I myself am Ahmad — I have overturned Ahmad's religion by cunning."

Tell Musaylima: lessen your insolence. Do not be beguiled by the beginning; look to the end.

Do not play the guide out of greed for gathering. Follow behind, so the candle may go ahead.

The candle reveals the destination like the moon — Whether on this side lies grain, or a snare.

Whether you wish it or not, by lamplight The figure of the falcon and the figure of the crow become visible.

Otherwise these deceitful crows have kindled a blaze — They have learned the cry of the white falcons.

If a young man should learn the hoopoe's call, Where is the hoopoe's secret and the message of Sheba?

Know the call of the free from the call of the bound; Know the crown of kings from the crown of hoopoes.

The words of dervishes and the subtleties of the 'ārifān — These shameless ones have bound them upon their tongues.

Every ruin that befell the earlier communities Was because they took sandalwood for oud.

They had the discernment that the Manifestation reveals, But greed and avarice make one blind and deaf.

The blindness of the blind is not far from mercy; The blindness of greed — that is not excusable.

The king's crucifixion is not far from mercy; The crucifixion of envy is not forgiven.

O fish, look to the end — look at the fishhook! Greediness of the throat has shut your far-seeing eye.

With two eyes, see both beginning and end. Beware — be not one-eyed like the accursed Iblis.

The one-eyed is he who sees only the present moment and nothing more, Like animals, unaware of what comes after.

The two eyes of a cow, in a matter of damage, Are like one eye — which has no distinction.

Those two eyes of his are worth half the blood-price, For his two eyes together are equal to one eye of yours.

And if you put out one eye of a son of Adam, Half the blood-price is due by the rule of law.

Because a human eye, alone by itself, Without the two eyes of a companion, still does its work.

The donkey's eye — since its beginning has no end — Even if it has two eyes, its judgment is one-eyed.

This discourse has no end — and that frivolous one Writes his petition in greed for a morsel of bread.
