Book Four - Section 71 - The Agitation of That Slave Due to the Non-Arrival of the Reply to the Letter from the King

Original content

English translation

This desert itself has neither foot nor head; That lad is weary, his letter still unanswered.

Saying, "How strange that the king has sent no reply— The letter-bearer, in his vexation, acted treacherously.

He hid the letter and did not show it to the king, For he was a hypocrite—water running unseen beneath the straw."

"I shall write another letter, as a test, And seek a different messenger, one of many skills."

Upon the emir, the cook, and the letter-carrier That ignorant, unknowing one has laid his blame.

He never turns around himself to see that he Has gone astray, like one sunk in the religion of the shaman.
