چون درآمد عزم داودی به تنگ
که بسازد مسجد اقصی به سنگ

وحی کردش حق که ترک این بخوان
که ز دستت برنیاید این مکان

نیست در تقدیر ما آنک تو این
مسجد اقصی بر آری ای گزین

گفت جرمم چیست ای دانای راز
که مرا گویی که مسجد را مساز

گفت بی‌جرمی تو خونها کرده‌ای
خون مظلومان بگردن برده‌ای

که ز آواز تو خلقی بی‌شمار
جان بدادند و شدند آن را شکار

خون بسی رفتست بر آواز تو
بر صدای خوب جان‌پرداز تو

گفت مغلوب تو بودم مست تو
دست من بر بسته بود از دست تو

نه که هر مغلوب شه مرحوم بود
نه که المغلوب کالمعدوم بود

گفت این مغلوب معدومیست کو
جز به نسبت نیست معدوم ایقنوا

این چنین معدوم کو از خویش رفت
بهترین هستها افتاد و زفت

او به نسبت با صفات حق فناست
در حقیقت در فنا او را بقاست

جملهٔ ارواح در تدبیر اوست
جملهٔ اشباح هم در تیر اوست

آنک او مغلوب اندر لطف ماست
نیست مضطر بلک مختار ولاست

منتهای اختیار آنست خود
که اختیارش گردد اینجا مفتقد

اختیاری را نبودی چاشنی
گر نگشتی آخر او محو از منی

در جهان گر لقمه و گر شربتست
لذت او فرع محو لذتست

گرچه از لذات بی‌تاثیر شد
لذتی بود او و لذت‌گیر شد

English translation

When David's resolve was pressed to its limit to build the Aqsa Mosque in stone, God revealed to him: Abandon this intent, for this place cannot be raised by your hand. It is not in Our decree that you should raise this Aqsa Mosque, O chosen one.

He said: What is my crime, O Knower of secrets, that You bid me not to build the mosque? He said: Without sin, you have shed rivers of blood, the blood of the oppressed you have carried on your neck. For at your voice, a multitude without number gave up their souls and became its prey. Much blood has flowed because of your voice, because of your beautiful, soul-surrendering sound.

He said: I was overcome by You, drunk with You; my hand was bound by Your hand. Is not every one overcome by the King shown mercy? Is not "the overcome as the nonexistent"?

He said: This overcome one — what nonexistence is this? He is nonexistent only in relation — know this for certain. Such a nonexistent one who has gone from himself has fallen into the finest of existences, strong and mighty. In relation to the attributes of God he is in fanā', but in truth, within fanā' he has baqā'. All souls are under his governance, and all bodies too are within his aim. He who is overcome within Our grace is not compelled but is freely sovereign. The very pinnacle of free will is this itself: that his will becomes here wholly absent. Free will would have had no savor had it not ultimately become annihilated from selfhood. In the world, whether morsel or drink, its pleasure is a branch of the annihilation of pleasure. Though he became unaffected by pleasures, he was himself a pleasure and became a receiver of pleasure.
