چون سلیمان کرد آغاز بنا
پاک چون کعبه همایون چون منی

در بنااش دیده می‌شد کر و فر
نی فسرده چون بناهای دگر

در بنا هر سنگ کز که می‌سکست
فاش سیروا بی‌همی گفت از نخست

هم‌چو از آب و گل آدم‌کده
نور ز آهک پاره‌ها تابان شده

سنگ بی‌حمال آینده شده
وان در و دیوارها زنده شده

حق همی‌گوید که دیوار بهشت
نیست چون دیوارها بی‌جان و زشت

چون در و دیوار تن با آگهیست
زنده باشد خانه چون شاهنشهیست

هم درخت و میوه هم آب زلال
با بهشتی در حدیث و در مقال

زانک جنت را نه ز آلت بسته‌اند
بلک از اعمال و نیت بسته‌اند

این بنا ز آب و گل مرده بدست
وان بنا از طاعت زنده شدست

این به اصل خویش ماند پرخلل
وان به اصل خود که علمست و عمل

هم سریر و قصر و هم تاج و ثیاب
با بهشتی در سؤال و در جواب

فرش بی‌فراش پیچیده شود
خانه بی‌مکناس روبیده شود

خانهٔ دل بین ز غم ژولیده شد
بی‌کناس از توبه‌ای روبیده شد

تخت او سیار بی‌حمال شد
حلقه و در مطرب و قوال شد

هست در دل زندگی دارالخلود
در زبانم چون نمی‌آید چه سود

چون سلیمان در شدی هر بامداد
مسجد اندر بهر ارشاد عباد

پند دادی گه بگفت و لحن و ساز
گه به فعل اعنی رکوعی یا نماز

پند فعلی خلق را جذاب‌تر
که رسد در جان هر باگوش و کر

اندر آن وهم امیری کم بود
در حشم تاثیر آن محکم بود

English translation

When Solomon began the building —\nPure like the Ka'ba, auspicious like Minā —\nIn its building was seen majesty and glory,\nNot frozen, like other buildings.\nEvery stone that broke from the mountain in the building\nOpenly was saying from the first: "Move with me."\nLike from the water and clay of the human dwelling,\nLight was shining from the fragments of lime.\nThe stone came without a porter,\nAnd those doors and walls became alive.\nGod says that the walls of Paradise\nAre not like walls — lifeless and ugly.\nWhen the doors and walls of the body are aware,\nThe house lives as though in a royal palace.\nBoth tree and fruit, and also clear water,\nIn conversation and discourse with the inhabitant of Paradise.\nFor Paradise was not fashioned with instruments,\nBut was fashioned from deeds and intentions.\nThis building was dead — of water and clay;\nThat building was made alive through worship.\nThis one stays true to its origin — full of flaws;\nThat one accords with its origin — which is knowledge and action.\nBoth throne and palace, and also crown and garment,\nIn question and answer with the inhabitant of Paradise.\nThe carpet rolls up without a spreader,\nThe house is swept without a broom.\nSee the house of the heart — it grew disheveled from grief;\nWithout a sweeper, it was swept clean by a single repentance.\nHis throne moved without a porter,\nThe ring and door became musician and singer.\nThere is in the heart the life of the Abode of Eternity —\nSince it comes not onto my tongue, what use is it?\nWhen Solomon would enter every morning\nInto the mosque for the guidance of worshippers,\nHe would give counsel — sometimes through word and melody and music,\nSometimes through deed — that is, a rukūʿ or prayer.\nCounsel through deed is more attractive to people,\nFor it reaches the soul of everyone — the attentive and the deaf.\nIn it, the phantom of lordship was diminished,\nAnd in the retinue, its effect was firm.
