ای سلیمان مسجد اقصی بساز
لشکر بلقیس آمد در نماز

چونک او بنیاد آن مسجد نهاد
جن و انس آمد بدن در کار داد

یک گروه از عشق و قومی بی‌مراد
هم‌چنانک در ره طاعت عباد

خلق دیوانند و شهوت سلسله
می‌کشدشان سوی دکان و غله

هست این زنجیر از خوف و وله
تو مبین این خلق را بی‌سلسله

می‌کشاندشان سوی کسب و شکار
می‌کشاندشان سوی کان و بحار

می‌کشدشان سوی نیک و سوی بد
گفت حق فی جیدها حبل المسد

قد جعلنا الحبل فی اعناقهم
واتخذنا الحبل من اخلاقهم

لیس من مستقذر مستنقه
قط الا طایره فی عنقه

حرص تو در کار بد چون آتشست
اخگر از رنگ خوش آتش خوشست

آن سیاهی فحم در آتش نهان
چونک آتش شد سیاهی شد عیان

اخگر از حرص تو شد فحم سیاه
حرص چون شد ماند آن فحم تباه

آن زمان آن فحم اخگر می‌نمود
آن نه حسن کار نار حرص بود

حرص کارت را بیاراییده بود
حرص رفت و ماند کار تو کبود

غوله‌ای را که بر آرایید غول
پخته پندارد کسی که هست گول

آزمایش چون نماید جان او
کند گردد ز آزمون دندان او

از هوس آن دام دانه می‌نمود
عکس غول حرص و آن خود خام بود

حرص اندر کار دین و خیر جو
چون نماند حرص باشد نغزرو

خیرها نغزند نه از عکس غیر
تاب حرص ار رفت ماند تاب خیر

تاب حرص از کار دنیا چون برفت
فحم باشد مانده از اخگر بتفت

کودکان را حرص می‌آرد غرار
تا شوند از ذوق دل دامن‌سوار

چون ز کودک رفت آن حرص بدش
بر دگر اطفال خنده آیدش

که چه می‌کردم چه می‌دیدم درین
خل ز عکس حرص بنمود انگبین

آن بنای انبیا بی حرص بود
زان چنان پیوسته رونقها فزود

ای بسا مسجد بر آورده کرام
لیک نبود مسجد اقصاش نام

کعبه را که هر دمی عزی فزود
آن ز اخلاصات ابراهیم بود

فضل آن مسجد خاک و سنگ نیست
لیک در بناش حرص و جنگ نیست

نه کتبشان مثل کتب دیگران
نی مساجدشان نی کسب وخان و مان

نه ادبشان نه غضبشان نه نکال
نه نعاس و نه قیاس و نه مقال

هر یکیشان را یکی فری دگر
مرغ جانشان طایر از پری دگر

دل همی لرزد ز ذکر حالشان
قبلهٔ افعال ما افعالشان

مرغشان را بیضه‌ها زرین بدست
نیم‌شب جانشان سحرگه بین شدست

هر چه گویم من به جان نیکوی قوم
نقص گفتم گشته ناقص‌گوی قوم

مسجد اقصی بسازید ای کرام
که سلیمان باز آمد والسلام

ور ازین دیوان و پریان سر کشند
جمله را املاک در چنبر کشند

دیو یک دم کژ رود از مکر و زرق
تازیانه آیدش بر سر چو برق

چون سلیمان شو که تا دیوان تو
سنگ برند از پی ایوان تو

چون سلیمان باش بی‌وسواس و ریو
تا ترا فرمان برد جنی و دیو

خاتم تو این دلست و هوش دار
تا نگردد دیو را خاتم شکار

پس سلیمانی کند بر تو مدام
دیو با خاتم حذر کن والسلام

آن سلیمانی دلا منسوخ نیست
در سر و سرت سلیمانی کنیست

دیو هم وقتی سلیمانی کند
لیک هر جولاهه اطلس کی تند

دست جنباند چو دست او ولیک
در میان هر دوشان فرقیست نیک

English translation

O Solomon, build Masjid al-Aqṣā— The army of Bilqīs has come to prayer.

When he laid the foundation of that mosque, Jinn and humans came fully to give their labor.

One group from love, and a people without will— Just as servants in the path of obedience.

People are mad, and desire is their chain— It drags them toward the shop and grain.

This chain is of fear and ecstatic longing— Do not see these people as without chain.

It drags them toward earning and hunting, It drags them toward mines and seas.

It draws them toward good and toward evil— God said: "Around her neck is a rope of twisted fiber."

"We have placed the rope around their necks, and We have made the rope from their own characters."

"There is no vile one wallowing in mire but that its bird hangs around its neck."

Your greed in evil deeds is like fire— An ember, by the fair color of fire, seems fair.

The blackness of coal is hidden within the fire; When the fire dies, the blackness becomes manifest.

The ember, through your greed, became black coal— When greed is gone, that ruined coal remains.

At that time the coal appeared as an ember— That was not the beauty of the work but the fire of greed.

Greed had adorned your work; Greed departed, and your work remained livid.

A ghoul adorned by a ghoul— One who is a fool thinks her mature.

When trial reveals its soul, One's teeth are blunted by the test.

From desire, that snare appeared as grain— It was the reflection of greed's ghoul, and was itself raw.

Greed in the work of religion—and seeking good— When greed remains no more, it runs beautifully.

Good things are beautiful, not from the reflection of another; If the luster of greed departs, the luster of good remains.

When the luster of greed departs from worldly work, Coal remains from the once-blazing ember.

Greed brings allurement to children, Until they become, from heart's delight, skirt-riders.

When that bad greed departs from the child, He laughs at other children—

"What was I doing? What did I see in this?" Vinegar appeared as honey through the reflection of greed.

The building of the prophets was without greed— Therefore its prosperity continuously increased.

Many a mosque has been built by noble ones, But none bore the name of Masjid al-Aqṣā.

The Ka'ba, to which honor increased at every moment— That was from the sincerities of Abraham.

The merit of that mosque is not in earth and stone, But in its building there is no greed and strife.

Their books are not like the books of others, Nor their mosques, nor their trade, abode, and home.

Not their conduct, nor their anger, nor their punishment, Nor their slumber, nor their analogy, nor their speech.

Each one of them has a different splendor, The bird of their soul flies on different feathers.

The heart trembles at the mention of their states— The qibla of our actions is their actions.

Their bird has golden eggs at hand— Their midnight soul has become the vision of dawn.

Whatever I say about the fine soul of the folk, I have spoken deficiency, become a deficient-speaker of the folk.

Build Masjid al-Aqṣā, O noble ones— For Solomon has returned. And peace.

And if the demons and fairies rebel from this, The angels will draw them all into the circle.

If a demon strays for a moment through trickery and deceit, A whip will come upon its head like lightning.

Become like Solomon so that your demons Carry stones for the sake of your palace.

Be like Solomon, without obsessive doubt and deceit, So that jinnī and demon obey you.

Your seal-ring is this heart—be vigilant Lest the demon make the seal-ring its prey.

Then it will exercise Solomon's power over you perpetually— Beware the demon with the seal-ring, and peace.

That Solomonic power, O heart, is not abrogated— In your head and in your mystery there is Solomonic capacity.

The demon too, at times, exercises Solomonic power, But does every weaver weave satin?

He moves his hand like his hand, but Between the two of them there is a clear difference.
