ای سلیمان مسجد اقصی بسازلشکر بلقیس آمد در نماز
O Solomon, build Masjid al-Aqṣā—
The army of Bilqīs has come to prayer.
چونک او بنیاد آن مسجد نهادجن و انس آمد بدن در کار داد
When he laid the foundation of that mosque,
Jinn and humans came fully to give their labor.
یک گروه از عشق و قومی بی مرادهم چنانک در ره طاعت عباد
One group from love, and a people without will—
Just as servants in the path of obedience.
خلق دیوانند و شهوت سلسلهمی کشدشان سوی دکان و غله
People are mad, and desire is their chain—
It drags them toward the shop and grain.
هست این زنجیر از خوف و ولهتو مبین این خلق را بی سلسله
This chain is of fear and ecstatic longing—
Do not see these people as without chain.
می کشاندشان سوی کسب و شکارمی کشاندشان سوی کان و بحار
It drags them toward earning and hunting,
It drags them toward mines and seas.
می کشدشان سوی نیک و سوی بدگفت حق فی جیدها حبل المسد
It draws them toward good and toward evil—
God said: "Around her neck is a rope of twisted fiber."
قد جعلنا الحبل فی اعناقهمواتخذنا الحبل من اخلاقهم
"We have placed the rope around their necks,
and We have made the rope from their own characters."
لیس من مستقذر مستنقهقط الا طایره فی عنقه
"There is no vile one wallowing in mire
but that its bird hangs around its neck."
حرص تو در کار بد چون آتشستاخگر از رنگ خوش آتش خوشست
Your greed in evil deeds is like fire—
An ember, by the fair color of fire, seems fair.
آن سیاهی فحم در آتش نهانچونک آتش شد سیاهی شد عیان
The blackness of coal is hidden within the fire;
When the fire dies, the blackness becomes manifest.
اخگر از حرص تو شد فحم سیاهحرص چون شد ماند آن فحم تباه
The ember, through your greed, became black coal—
When greed is gone, that ruined coal remains.
آن زمان آن فحم اخگر می نمودآن نه حسن کار نار حرص بود
At that time the coal appeared as an ember—
That was not the beauty of the work but the fire of greed.
حرص کارت را بیاراییده بودحرص رفت و ماند کار تو کبود
Greed had adorned your work;
Greed departed, and your work remained livid.
غوله ای را که بر آرایید غولپخته پندارد کسی که هست گول
A ghoul adorned by a ghoul—
One who is a fool thinks her mature.
آزمایش چون نماید جان اوکند گردد ز آزمون دندان او
When trial reveals its soul,
One's teeth are blunted by the test.
از هوس آن دام دانه می نمودعکس غول حرص و آن خود خام بود
From desire, that snare appeared as grain—
It was the reflection of greed's ghoul, and was itself raw.
حرص اندر کار دین و خیر جوچون نماند حرص باشد نغزرو
Greed in the work of religion—and seeking good—
When greed remains no more, it runs beautifully.
خیرها نغزند نه از عکس غیرتاب حرص ار رفت ماند تاب خیر
Good things are beautiful, not from the reflection of another;
If the luster of greed departs, the luster of good remains.
تاب حرص از کار دنیا چون برفتفحم باشد مانده از اخگر بتفت
When the luster of greed departs from worldly work,
Coal remains from the once-blazing ember.
کودکان را حرص می آرد غرارتا شوند از ذوق دل دامن سوار
Greed brings allurement to children,
Until they become, from heart's delight, skirt-riders.
چون ز کودک رفت آن حرص بدشبر دگر اطفال خنده آیدش
When that bad greed departs from the child,
He laughs at other children—
که چه می کردم چه می دیدم درینخل ز عکس حرص بنمود انگبین
"What was I doing? What did I see in this?"
Vinegar appeared as honey through the reflection of greed.
آن بنای انبیا بی حرص بودزان چنان پیوسته رونقها فزود
The building of the prophets was without greed—
Therefore its prosperity continuously increased.
ای بسا مسجد بر آورده کراملیک نبود مسجد اقصاش نام
Many a mosque has been built by noble ones,
But none bore the name of Masjid al-Aqṣā.
کعبه را که هر دمی عزی فزودآن ز اخلاصات ابراهیم بود
The Ka'ba, to which honor increased at every moment—
That was from the sincerities of Abraham.
فضل آن مسجد خاک و سنگ نیستلیک در بناش حرص و جنگ نیست
The merit of that mosque is not in earth and stone,
But in its building there is no greed and strife.
نه کتبشان مثل کتب دیگراننی مساجدشان نی کسب وخان و مان
Their books are not like the books of others,
Nor their mosques, nor their trade, abode, and home.
نه ادبشان نه غضبشان نه نکالنه نعاس و نه قیاس و نه مقال
Not their conduct, nor their anger, nor their punishment,
Nor their slumber, nor their analogy, nor their speech.
هر یکیشان را یکی فری دگرمرغ جانشان طایر از پری دگر
Each one of them has a different splendor,
The bird of their soul flies on different feathers.
دل همی لرزد ز ذکر حالشانقبلهٔ افعال ما افعالشان
The heart trembles at the mention of their states—
The qibla of our actions is their actions.
مرغشان را بیضه ها زرین بدستنیم شب جانشان سحرگه بین شدست
Their bird has golden eggs at hand—
Their midnight soul has become the vision of dawn.
هر چه گویم من به جان نیکوی قومنقص گفتم گشته ناقص گوی قوم
Whatever I say about the fine soul of the folk,
I have spoken deficiency, become a deficient-speaker of the folk.
مسجد اقصی بسازید ای کرامکه سلیمان باز آمد والسلام
Build Masjid al-Aqṣā, O noble ones—
For Solomon has returned. And peace.
ور ازین دیوان و پریان سر کشندجمله را املاک در چنبر کشند
And if the demons and fairies rebel from this,
The angels will draw them all into the circle.
دیو یک دم کژ رود از مکر و زرقتازیانه آیدش بر سر چو برق
If a demon strays for a moment through trickery and deceit,
A whip will come upon its head like lightning.
چون سلیمان شو که تا دیوان توسنگ برند از پی ایوان تو
Become like Solomon so that your demons
Carry stones for the sake of your palace.
چون سلیمان باش بی وسواس و ریوتا ترا فرمان برد جنی و دیو
Be like Solomon, without obsessive doubt and deceit,
So that jinnī and demon obey you.
خاتم تو این دلست و هوش دارتا نگردد دیو را خاتم شکار
Your seal-ring is this heart—be vigilant
Lest the demon make the seal-ring its prey.
پس سلیمانی کند بر تو مدامدیو با خاتم حذر کن والسلام
Then it will exercise Solomon's power over you perpetually—
Beware the demon with the seal-ring, and peace.
آن سلیمانی دلا منسوخ نیستدر سر و سرت سلیمانی کنیست
That Solomonic power, O heart, is not abrogated—
In your head and in your mystery there is Solomonic capacity.
دیو هم وقتی سلیمانی کندلیک هر جولاهه اطلس کی تند
The demon too, at times, exercises Solomonic power,
But does every weaver weave satin?
دست جنباند چو دست او ولیکدر میان هر دوشان فرقیست نیک
He moves his hand like his hand, but
Between the two of them there is a clear difference.
