ای ضیاء الحق حسام الدین توی
که گذشت از مه به نورت مثنوی

همت عالی تو ای مرتجا
می‌کشد این را خدا داند کجا

گردن این مثنوی را بسته‌ای
می‌کشی آن سوی که دانسته‌ای

مثنوی پویان کشنده ناپدید
ناپدید از جاهلی کش نیست دید

مثنوی را چون تو مبدا بوده‌ای
گر فزون گردد توش افزوده‌ای

چون چنین خواهی خدا خواهد چنین
می‌دهد حق آرزوی متقین

کان لله بوده‌ای در ما مضی
تا که کان الله پیش آمد جزا

مثنوی از تو هزاران شکر داشت
در دعا و شکر کفها بر فراشت

در لب و کفش خدا شکر تو دید
فضل کرد و لطف فرمود و مزید

زانک شاکر را زیادت وعده است
آنچنانک قرب مزد سجده است

گفت واسجد واقترب یزدان ما
قرب جان شد سجده ابدان ما

گر زیادت می‌شود زین رو بود
نه از برای بوش و های و هو بود

با تو ما چون رز به تابستان خوشیم
حکم داری هین بکش تا می‌کشیم

خوش بکش این کاروان را تا به حج
ای امیر صبر مفتاح الفرج

حج زیارت کردن خانه بود
حج رب البیت مردانه بود

زان ضیا گفتم حسام‌الدین ترا
که تو خورشیدی و این دو وصفها

کین حسام و این ضیا یکیست هین
تیغ خورشید از ضیا باشد یقین

نور از آن ماه باشد وین ضیا
آن خورشید این فرو خوان از نبا

شمس را قرآن ضیا خواند ای پدر
و آن قمر را نور خواند این را نگر

شمس چون عالی‌تر آمد خود ز ماه
پس ضیا از نور افزون دان به جاه

بس کس اندر نور مه منهج ندید
چون برآمد آفتاب آن شد پدید

آفتاب اعواض را کامل نمود
لاجرم بازارها در روز بود

تا که قلب و نقد نیک آید پدید
تا بود از غبن و از حیله بعید

تا که نورش کامل آمد در زمین
تاجران را رحمة للعالمین

لیک بر قلاب مبغوضست و سخت
زانک ازو شد کاسد او را نقد و رخت

پس عدو جان صرافست قلب
دشمن درویش کی بود غیر کلب

انبیا با دشمنان بر می‌تنند
پس ملایک رب سلم می‌زنند

کین چراغی را که هست او نور کار
از پف و دمهای دزدان دور دار

دزد و قلابست خصم نور بس
زین دو ای فریادرس فریاد رس

روشنی بر دفتر چارم بریز
کآفتاب از چرخ چارم کرد خیز

هین ز چارم نور ده خورشیدوار
تا بتابد بر بلاد و بر دیار

هر کش افسانه بخواند افسانه است
وآنک دیدش نقد خود مردانه است

آب نیلست و به قبطی خون نمود
قوم موسی را نه خون بد آب بود

دشمن این حرف این دم در نظر
شد ممثل سرنگون اندر سقر

ای ضیاء الحق تو دیدی حال او
حق نمودت پاسخ افعال او

دیدهٔ غیبت چو غیبست اوستاد
کم مبادا زین جهان این دید و داد

این حکایت را که نقد وقت ماست
گر تمامش می‌کنی اینجا رواست

ناکسان را ترک کن بهر کسان
قصه را پایان بر و مخلص رسان

این حکایت گر نشد آنجا تمام
چارمین جلدست آرش در نظام

English translation

O Żiyā' al-Ḥaqq, you are Ḥusām al-Dīn, by whose light the Masnavi has surpassed the moon. Your lofty aspiration, O hoped-for one, draws this — God knows to where. You have bound the neck of this Masnavi, drawing it toward where you have knowledge. The Masnavi moves, drawn by an invisible hand, invisible to the ignorant one who has no sight. Since you have been the source of the Masnavi, if it increases, you are the one who has added to it. As you will it thus, God wills it thus; the Truth grants the desires of the God-fearing. You have been kāna lillāh in what has passed, so kāna Allāhu came forward as recompense. The Masnavi had a thousand thanks for you, in prayer and gratitude it raised its palms. In its lips and palms God saw your gratitude, and bestowed grace, showed kindness, and increase. For the grateful one is promised increase, just as nearness is the reward of prostration. Our God said, "Prostrate and draw near," the prostration of bodies became nearness of souls. If it increases, it is for this reason, not for the sake of its fragrance or clamor and noise. With you we are glad like the vine in summer; you have command — come, pull, for we are being pulled. Draw this caravan pleasantly to the Hajj, O commander of patience, key of relief. Hajj is the visiting of the House, but the Hajj of the Lord of the House is truly manly. I called you Żiyā', Ḥusām al-Dīn, because you are the sun, and these two attributes — this ḥusām and this żiyā' are one, behold: the sword of the sun is certainly of radiance. Nūr belongs to the moon, and żiyā' — call that one the moon, this one the sun; read it from the scripture. The Qur'an called the sun żiyā', O dear one, and called the moon nūr — observe this. Since the sun is higher in rank than the moon, know then that żiyā' surpasses nūr in station. Many a person found no path by moonlight; when the sun rose, that became manifest. The sun made the exchange of goods perfect, so necessarily the markets were by day. So that counterfeit coin and genuine coin may be distinguished, and be far from fraud and deceit. So that his light came perfect upon the earth — a raḥmatan lil-'ālamīn for the merchants. But for the counterfeiter he is loathed and harsh, for by him his coin and wares became worthless. So the enemy of the soul of the money-changer is the counterfeit coin; what enemy of the dervish could there be but a dog? The prophets wrestle with their enemies, and so the angels say: "Lord, grant peace." "Keep this lamp, which is the light of work, far from the puffs and blowing of thieves." Thief and counterfeiter are the enemies of light — enough; from these two, O helper of those who cry out, save us. Pour light upon the fourth book, for the sun rises from the fourth sphere. Come, give light from the fourth like the sun, so that it may shine upon lands and regions. Whoever reads it as a fable, it is a fable for him; but whoever sees it as ready coin — that itself is manly. It is the water of the Nile: to the Copt it appeared as blood, but for the people of Moses it was not blood — it was water. The enemy of this word, at this moment before our eyes, has been embodied, cast headlong into hell. O Żiyā' al-Ḥaqq, you have seen his state; the Truth has shown you the recompense of his deeds. Your eye of the unseen is itself a master of the unseen; may this sight and justice never diminish from this world. This tale, which is the ready coin of our time — if you complete it here, that is fitting. Abandon the base for the worthy; bring the story to its end and deliver its conclusion. If this tale was not completed there, the fourth volume — keep that in mind in the arrangement.
