عقل می‌گفتش حماقت با توست
با حماقت عقل را آید شکست

عقل را باشد وفای عهدها
تو نداری عقل رو ای خربها

عقل را یاد آید از پیمان خود
پردهٔ نسیان بدراند خرد

چونک عقلت نیست نسیان میر تست
دشمن و باطل کن تدبیر تست

از کمی عقل پروانهٔ خسیس
یاد نارد ز آتش و سوز و حسیس

چونک پرش سوخت توبه می‌کند
آز و نسیانش بر آتش می‌زند

ضبط و درک و حافظی و یادداشت
عقل را باشد که عقل آن را فراشت

چونک گوهر نیست تابش چون بود
چون مذکر نیست ایابش چون بود

این تمنی هم ز بی‌عقلی اوست
که نبیند کان حماقت را چه خوست

آن ندامت از نتیجهٔ رنج بود
نه ز عقل روشن چون گنج بود

چونک شد رنج آن ندامت شد عدم
می‌نیرزد خاک آن توبه و ندم

آن ندم از ظلمت غم بست بار
پس کلام اللیل یمحوه النهار

چون برفت آن ظلمت غم گشت خوش
هم رود از دل نتیجه و زاده‌اش

می‌کند او توبه و پیر خرد
بانگ لو ردوا لعادوا می‌زند

English translation

Book Four — Section 88 — Explanation that the pledge-making and remorse of a fool in times of tribulation have no faithfulness whatsoever, for "And if they were returned, they would go back to what they were forbidden, and they are indeed liars" — the false dawn has no faithfulness

Reason said to him: "Folly is with you; With folly, reason itself meets defeat.

Faithfulness to pledges belongs to reason; You have no reason — go, O asses!

Reason recalls its own covenant; Intellect rends the veil of forgetfulness.

Since you have no reason, forgetfulness is your lord — The enemy and nullifier of your every plan.

From scarcity of reason, the base moth Does not remember the fire, the burning, and the searing.

When its wings are burned, it repents; But greed and forgetfulness cast it back into the fire.

Retention and comprehension, memory and mindfulness — These belong to reason, which has arrayed them all.

When the jewel is absent, how can its luster be? When the reminder is absent, how can its return be?

This very longing too comes from his lack of reason: That he cannot see what folly craves.

That remorse was the offspring of pain, Not of luminous reason, as a treasure would be.

When the pain was gone, that remorse became nothing; That repentance and contrition are not worth a grain of dust.

That remorse was laden with the darkness of grief — So: the words of the night are effaced by the day.

When that darkness departed and grief became pleasant, The fruit thereof and its offspring likewise depart from the heart.

He repents, but the elder of wisdom Cries out: "Lo, if they were returned, they would go back!"
