دفتر چهارم - بخش ۱۱۶ - بیان آنک روح حیوانی و عقل جز وی و وهم و خیال بر مثال دوغند و روح کی باقیست درین دوغ هم‌چون روغن پنهانست / Book Four - Section 116 - Explaining that the animal spirit, the partial intellect, illusion, and imagination are like buttermilk, and the spirit which is everlasting is hidden in this buttermilk like butter

جوهر صدقت خفی شد در دروغ
هم‌چو طعم روغن اندر طعم دوغ

آن دروغت این تن فانی بود
راستت آن جان ربانی بود

سالها این دوغ تن پیدا و فاش
روغن جان اندرو فانی و لاش

تا فرستد حق رسولی بنده‌ای
دوغ را در خمره جنباننده‌ای

تا بجنباند به هنجار و به فن
تا بدانم من که پنهان بود من

یا کلام بنده‌ای کان جزو اوست
در رود در گوش او کو وحی جوست

اذن مؤمن وحی ما را واعیست
آنچنان گوشی قرین داعیست

هم‌چنانک گوش طفل از گفت مام
پر شود ناطق شود او درکلام

ور نباشد طفل را گوش رشد
گفت مادر نشنود گنگی شود

دایما هر کر اصلی گنگ بود
ناطق آنکس شد که از مادر شنود

دانک گوش کر و گنگ از آفتیست
که پذیرای دم و تعلیم نیست

آنک بی‌تعلیم بد ناطق خداست
که صفات او ز علتها جداست

یا چو آدم کرده تلقینش خدا
بی‌حجاب مادر و دایه و ازا

یا مسیحی که به تعلیم ودود
در ولادت ناطق آمد در وجود

از برای دفع تهمت در ولاد
که نزادست از زنا و از فساد

جنبشی بایست اندر اجتهاد
تا که دوغ آن روغن از دل باز داد

روغن اندر دوغ باشد چون عدم
دوغ در هستی برآورده علم

آنک هستت می‌نماید هست پوست
وآنک فانی می‌نماید اصل اوست

دوغ روغن ناگرفتست و کهن
تا بنگزینی بنه خرجش مکن

هین بگردانش به دانش دست دست
تا نماید آنچ پنهان کرده است

زآنک این فانی دلیل باقیست
لابهٔ مستان دلیل ساقیست

English translation

The essence of your truth was hidden in falsehood, Like the taste of butter concealed within the taste of buttermilk. That falsehood of yours was this perishable body; Your truth was that divine soul. For years this buttermilk of the body was manifest and plain, While the butter of the soul within it lay hidden and effaced. Until God sends a messenger — a servant — A churner of the buttermilk in the jar, To churn it with method and skill, So that I may know that I was the hidden one. Or the words of a servant who is a part of him Enter the ear of one who seeks revelation. The ear of the believer is receptive to our revelation; Such an ear is the companion of the divine caller. Just as a child's ear fills with the mother's speech And he becomes articulate in language — But if the child lacks a mature, receptive ear, He will not hear the mother's words and will be struck mute. Always, every congenitally deaf person is mute; He who heard from his mother became articulate. Know that the deaf-mute ear arises from a defect — It is not receptive to the breath and to instruction. He who was articulate without instruction is God, Whose attributes are separate from all causes — Or like Adam, whom God instructed directly, Without the veil of mother, wet-nurse, or kin. Or like Jesus, who through the teaching of the All-Loving (Wadūd) Came into existence articulate at birth, To repel the accusation leveled at his birth — That he was not born of fornication or corruption. A movement was needed in earnest striving (ijtihād), So that the buttermilk might yield that butter from its heart. Butter in the buttermilk is like non-existence, While the buttermilk in existence has raised its banner. What appears existent to you is only the outer skin, And what appears perishable — that is the very essence. The buttermilk has not yet yielded its butter and has grown old; Until you have chosen rightly, set it aside; do not expend it. Come, churn it with knowledge, hand over hand, So that it may reveal what it has kept hidden. For this perishable thing is a proof of the Everlasting; The supplication of the drunk is proof of the cup-bearer (sāqī).
