هر کجا خدا دوزخ کند
اوج را بر مرغ دام و فخ کند

هم ز دندانت برآید دردها
تا بگویی دوزخست و اژدها

یا کند آب دهانت را عسل
که بگویی که بهشتست و حلل

از بن دندان برویاند شکر
تا بدانی قوت حکم قدر

پس به دندان بی‌گناهان را مگز
فکر کن از ضربت نامحترز

نیل را بر قبطیان حق خون کند
سبطیان را از بلا محصون کند

تا بدانی پیش حق تمییز هست
در میان هوشیار راه و مست

نیل تمییز از خدا آموختست
که گشاد آن را و این را سخت بست

لطف او عاقل کند مر نیل را
قهر او ابله کند قابیل را

در جمادات از کرم عقل آفرید
عقل از عاقل به قهر خود برید

در جماد از لطف عقلی شد پدید
وز نکال از عاقلان دانش رمید

عقل چون باران به امر آنجا بریخت
عقل این سو خشم حق دید و گریخت

ابر و خورشید و مه و نجم بلند
جمله بر ترتیب آیند و روند

هر یکی ناید مگر در وقت خویش
که نه پس ماند ز هنگام و نه پیش

چون نکردی فهم این را ز انبیا
دانش آوردند در سنگ و عصا

تا جمادات دگر را بی لباس
چون عصا و سنگ داری از قیاس

طاعت سنگ و عصا ظاهر شود
وز جمادات دگر مخبر شود

که ز یزدان آگهیم و طایعیم
ما همه نی اتفاقی ضایعیم

هم‌چو آب نیل دانی وقت غرق
کو میان هر دو امت کرد فرق

چون زمین دانیش دانا وقت خسف
در حق قارون که قهرش کرد و نسف

چون قمر که امر بشنید و شتافت
پس دو نیمه گشت بر چرخ و شکافت

چون درخت و سنگ کاندر هر مقام
مصطفی را کرده ظاهرالسلام

English translation

Wherever God makes a hell, He turns the very heights into snare and trap for the bird.

Pain too will arise from your own tooth, So that you will say: "This is hell and a dragon."

Or He makes the water in your mouth into honey, So that you will say: "This is paradise and ḥulal."

He grows sugar from the root of the tooth, So that you may know the power of the decree of qadar.

So do not bite the innocent with your teeth; Think of the blow that cannot be avoided.

God makes the Nile blood for the Copts, And shields the Sibṭiyyān from that affliction.

So that you may know: before God there is tamyīz, Between the one alert upon the Path and the one who is drunk.

The Nile has learned tamyīz from God: He opened it for those and tightly sealed it for these.

His grace makes the Nile itself wise, His wrath makes Qābīl foolish.

In jamādāt He created intellect through generosity, And He severed intellect from the rational person through His own wrath.

Through grace, intellect became manifest in the inanimate, And through nikāl, knowledge fled from the intelligent ones.

Intellect, like rain, poured there by His command, Intellect on this side saw the wrath of God and fled.

Cloud and sun and moon and the lofty stars All come and go in proper order.

Each one comes only in its own time, Neither lingering behind its moment nor arriving before it.

Since you did not grasp this from the Prophets, They brought knowledge into stone and staff.

So that you may hold other inanimate things, unveiled, By analogy with staff and stone.

The obedience of stone and staff becomes manifest, And gives tidings of the other inanimate things—

That we are aware of Yazdān and obedient; We are none of us accidental or wasted.

Just as you know the water of the Nile at the time of drowning, That it made distinction between the two communities.

Just as you know the earth to be knowing at the time of khusf, In the case of Qārūn, whom it overpowered and obliterated.

Like the moon, which heard the command and hastened, Then split into two halves upon the celestial sphere.

Like the tree and stone that in every station Rendered manifest their greeting of peace to Muṣṭafā.
