The Metaphor of Tying the Camel (Tawakkul and Jahd)

In Book One, Section 45 of the Masnavi, Rumi uses the lion to invoke a famous prophetic tradition (Hadith): 'Tie the camel's knee and trust in God.' This metaphor is central to the debate between exertion (Jahd) and reliance on God (Tawakkul). The lion uses this saying, along with the principle 'al-kāsibu ḥabību llāh' (the earner is the beloved of God), to argue that practical effort is not a violation of trust in the divine, but rather a necessary practice aligned with the Prophet's path.
