The Metaphysical Status of Women and Divine Love in the Masnavi

In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi (Book One, Section 119), Rumi provides a profound Sufi discourse on the nature of women, love, and the Divine. Commenting on the prophetic tradition that women prevail over the wise, while the ignorant dominate women, Rumi explains that those possessing a 'heart' are characterized by gentleness and love, which makes them receptive to feminine grace. In contrast, the ignorant, ruled by their animal nature, dominate through anger and brute force.

Most significantly, Rumi elevates the feminine beyond physical attraction, stating that a woman is 'a ray of God, not merely a beloved' and describing her as having a 'creative' quality. In Sufi metaphysics, this suggests that feminine beauty and love serve as direct manifestations of divine light and creative power, acting as a spiritual bridge to the Creator.
