In Section 6 of Jami's Layli and Majnun (within the Haft Awrang), the poet explains why he undertook this work. He argues that among all the subjects known to eloquent speakers, the tale of love is the most accepted subject and the most pleasing melody. Having already delighted audiences with the sweet verses of Yusuf and Zulaykha, which stirred a passion in the world and lifted the hearts of lovers, his own thirst was not quenched, and his heart longed to sing a new tune. Casting an auspicious lot, his choice fell upon recounting the state of Majnun. He also acknowledges that two earlier masters had already raised lofty edifices in this poetic domain, situating his own effort within that tradition. The passage is a clear instance of the sabab-e nazm (reason for composition) convention in Persian narrative poetry, in which a poet justifies his undertaking and frames love as the worthiest theme.
