The Paradox of Divine Hiddenness through Extreme Manifestation
In Sufi metaphysics, particularly as illustrated in Mahmud Shabestari's Golshan-e Raz, God's hiddenness is explained as a consequence of extreme, unvarying manifestation (Zuhur). Using the metaphor of the sun, Shabestari argues that if sunlight were completely uniform and constant, without shadows or celestial movement, humans would lack the contrast needed to perceive it. Similarly, because the Divine Light is the continuous, omnipresent foundation of all existence, the speculative intellect fails to distinguish it. Thus, the Divine is hidden not by absence, but by the blinding intensity of its sheer, omnipresent manifestation.
