Jami reverses the conventional relationship between panegyric poetry and patronage: the poet is threatened not by neglect or stinginess, but by limitless compensation.

The episode uses hyperbole and irony to show that even a virtue such as generosity can become burdensome when practiced without measure. Qatran's escape turns excessive bounty into a playful image of abundance exceeding the recipient's capacity.
