بود قطران نکته دانی سحرساز
قطره ای از کلک او دریای راز

بهر دریا بخشش فضلون لقب
گفت مدحی سر به سر فضل و ادب

طبع فضلون چون بر آن اقبال کرد
دامنش از مال مالامال کرد

روز دیگر مدحت او را بخواند
ضعف اول سیم و زر بر وی فشاند

همچنین روز دگر این کار کرد
روزها این کار را تکرار کرد

شد ز بس تضعیف چندان آن صله
که به تنگ آمد ازانش حوصله

چون درآمد شب چو برق از جای جست
وز حریم فضل فضلون بار بست

بامدادانش طلب کرد و نیافت
گفت مسکین روی ازین دولت بتافت

بودیم تا دست بر بذل درم
با ویم این بود دستور کرم

لیکن او را تاب این بخشش نبود
در سفر زین آستان کوشش نمود

English translation

Qatran was a witty poet, a magician of words; A single drop from his pen was a sea of secrets. For Fazlun, who was surnamed 'The Ocean of Bestowal,' He composed a panegyric filled from end to end with virtue and refinement. When Fazlun’s nature looked upon it with favor, He filled the poet’s lap to the brim with wealth. The next day, the praise was read again, And Fazlun showered upon him double the initial silver and gold. He did the same the following day, And repeated this act for many days. Through so many doublings, the reward grew so immense That the poet’s capacity was overwhelmed by it. When night fell, he leaped up like lightning, And packed his baggage to flee from the sanctuary of Fazlun's grace. In the morning, Fazlun sought him and found him not; He said, 'The poor man has turned his face away from this good fortune.' As long as we have the hand to bestow dirhams, This would have been our custom of generosity toward him. But he did not have the endurance for this bounty, And so he strove to journey away from this threshold.
