The Pest Control Game: An Example of Strategic Interaction

The 'pest control game' is a strategic interaction involving two farmers, Anil and Bala, who must each independently choose a pest control strategy. One option is a chemical pesticide called 'Toxic Tide', and the other is Integrated Pest Control (IPC). The outcome for each farmer depends on the combination of choices made. If only one uses Toxic Tide, environmental damage is limited, but if both use it, severe water contamination requires them to purchase a costly filtering system. Both farmers are aware that their final payoff—calculated as income from crops minus the costs of their pest control method and any necessary water filtration—is determined by both their own action and the other's choice.
