The Representation of Bodily Decline and Ageing in Sanai's Chapter on Weakness and Old Age
In Section 6 of Chapter 10 of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai offers a poignant reflection on the inevitability of aging and physical decline. He employs stark imagery, describing how youth was a vibrant, water-filled stream (juy-i umram pur-i ab-i rawshan bud) that has dried up, leaving behind cold earth and wet wind. He details the physical transformation of the elderly—the back bent like a bow (کرد پشتم کمان), the hair turned white like milk (موی چو شیر), and the loss of physical capacity and youth's vitality (nur-i shabab). For Sanai, this physical deterioration serves as a didactic warning: as the body weakens and the light of youth fades, the sensory distinctions of the material world blur, urging the soul to prepare for its spiritual transition and final surrender.
