The Schoolboys' Exploitation of the Master's Delusion in the Masnavi

In Book 3 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the schoolboys escalate their deception by actively exploiting the false imagination (وهموهم, wahm) they have just planted in their master's mind. Having convinced the healthy teacher that he is pale and ill, the clever ringleader initiates the next phase of the trick. He instructs the students to recite their lessons loudly and then hypocritically feigns concern, suggesting that their noise is exacerbating the master's newly acquired "headache." The master, now entirely consumed by the psychological suggestion, agrees that his pain has worsened and abruptly dismisses the class. Rumi uses this narrative progression to illustrate how a firmly rooted delusion renders an individual susceptible to further manipulation, causing them to abandon their responsibilities in favor of an imaginary ailment.
