The Mothers' Skepticism and the Schoolboys' Confidence in the Masnavi

In Book 3 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, after successfully manipulating their teacher into dismissing class, the schoolboys rush home to enjoy their freedom. However, they are immediately met with anger from their mothers, who accuse them of skipping school for amusement. The children deflect the blame, falsely claiming that their master has fallen ill by "heaven's decree." Recognizing their children's penchant for mischief, the mothers dismiss the excuse as a lie driven by a desire to play, promising to visit the master the next morning to verify the story. The children, fully confident in the depth of the delusion they have planted in the teacher's mind, boldly encourage their mothers to investigate. This episode highlights the success of their psychological trickery; the children know that the master's fabricated illness has become a functional reality, ensuring their deception will hold up to outside scrutiny.
