In Section 39 of Jami's Haft Awrang, the poet describes the second stage of love, where the lover recognizes the darkness of their egoistic desires (nafs) and actively turns their focus away from the self toward the Beloved. Unlike the self-centered first stage of love, the lover's speech, seeking, and actions are now entirely dedicated to the Beloved. Jami uses the classic metaphor of the moth (parvaneh) annihilating itself in the flame of the candle to illustrate the lover's willing self-effacement and sacrifice in the presence of the Beloved, moving beyond outer appearances (the shell) to reach spiritual truth (the kernel).
