The Spiritual Discernment of the Companions in the Masnavi
In Book One, Section 15 of the Masnavi, Rumi contrasts the gullibility of the masses with the sharp spiritual discernment of the Prophet's companions (Sahaba). While thousands blindly accepted the Vizier's deceptively pious preaching, the discerning companions could detect the hidden, ego-driven motives—described as the 'ghoul's breath'—beneath his outward acts of devotion. They examined his spiritual sincerity meticulously, easily distinguishing the ego's subtle tricks just as one distinguishes a rose from celery. This highlights a central theme in Rumi's teachings: the necessity of profound inner spiritual vigilance and awareness over superficial religious adherence.
