Book One - Section 15 - The Christians Accepting the Vizier's Deceit

Original content

English translation

Hundreds of thousands of Christian men came toward him; little by little they gathered in his quarter. He would explain to them, secretly, the mystery of the Gospels, the zunnar, and prayer. Outwardly he was a preacher of ordinances, but inwardly he was a whistle/lure and a trap. For this reason some of the Companions would ask the Messenger about the trickery of the ghoul-like nafs: what, from hidden motives, does it mix into acts of worship and into the sincerity of the soul? They would not seek from him the merit of obedience; they would seek the outward fault, asking where it was. Hair by hair and atom by atom they recognized the trickery of the nafs, as one distinguishes a flower from celery. Even the hair-splitting Companions, in his preaching, became bewildered in soul.
