آتشی افتاد در عهد عمر
همچو چوب خشک می خورد او حجر

در فتاد اندر بنا و خانه ها
تا زد اندر پر مرغ و لانه ها

نیم شهر از شعله ها آتش گرفت
آب می ترسید از آن و می شکفت

مشکهای آب و سرکه می زدند
بر سر آتش کسان هوشمند

آتش از استیزه افزون می شدی
می رسید او را مدد از بی حدی

خلق آمد جانب عمر شتاب
کآتش ما می نمیرد هیچ از آب

گفت آن آتش ز آیات خداست
شعله ای از آتش بخل شماست

آب و سرکه چیست نان قسمت کنید
بخل بگذارید اگر آل منید

خلق گفتندش که در بگشوده ایم
ما سخی و اهل فتوت بوده ایم

گفت نان در رسم و عادت داده اید
دست از بهر خدا نگشاده اید

بهر فخر و بهر بوش و بهر ناز
نه از برای ترس و تقوی و نیاز

مال تخمست و به هر شوره منه
تیغ را در دست هر ره زن مده

اهل دین را باز دان از اهل کین
همنشین حق بجو با او نشین

هر کسی بر قوم خود ایثار کرد
کاغه پندارد که او خود کار کرد

English translation

A fire broke out in the age of Umar, eating stone as though it were dry wood. It fell upon buildings and houses, until it struck the birds' wings and nests. Half the city caught fire from the flames; water was afraid of it and recoiled. Intelligent people threw waterskins of water and vinegar onto the fire. The fire grew greater from their opposition; aid reached it from boundlessness. The people hurried to Umar, saying, 'Our fire is not being extinguished by water at all.' He said, 'That fire is one of God's signs; it is a flame from the fire of your miserliness. What are water and vinegar? Distribute bread; leave miserliness behind, if you are my people.' The people said to him, 'We have opened our doors; we have been generous and people of chivalric virtue.' He said, 'You have given bread as custom and habit; you have not opened your hand for God's sake. It was for pride, for ostentation, and for vanity, not for fear of God, piety, and need. Wealth is seed: do not put it in salty soil. Do not put a sword in the hand of every highwayman. Recognize the people of religion apart from the people of malice; seek one who sits with God, and sit with him. Whoever sacrifices only for his own group thinks, like a crow, that he has performed the deed himself.'
