متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

اهل نار و خلد را بین هم دکاندر میانشان برزخ لایبغیان
Behold the people of Fire and of Paradise as neighbors —
between them a barzakh they do not overpass.
اهل نار و اهل نور آمیختهدر میانشان کوه قاف انگیخته
The people of Fire and the people of Light are intermingled;
between them Mount Qaf has been raised.
همچو در کان خاک و زر کرد اختلاطدر میانشان صد بیابان و رباط
As in the mine, earth and gold lie mixed together —
between them a hundred deserts and caravanserais.
همچنانک عقد، در در و شبهمختلط چون میهمان یک شبه
Just as a necklace of pearl and counterfeit stone,
intermixed like a one-night guest.
بحر را نیمیش شیرین چون شکرطعم شیرین رنگ روشن چون قمر
Half of the sea is sweet as sugar,
sweet in taste, bright in color as the moon.
نیم دیگر تلخ همچون زهر مارطعم تلخ و رنگ مظلم همچو قار
The other half bitter as serpent's venom,
bitter in taste, dark in color as pitch.
هر دو بر هم می زنند از تحت و اوجبر مثال آب دریا موج موج
Both crash against each other from depth and peak,
like the water of the sea, wave upon wave.
صورت بر هم زدن از جسم تنگاختلاط جانها در صلح و جنگ
The outward clashing comes from the narrow body;
the mingling of souls is in peace and war.
موجهای صلح بر هم می زندکینه ها از سینه ها بر می کند
The waves of peace clash together,
uprooting hatreds from hearts.
موجهای جنگ بر شکل دگرمهرها را می کند زیر و زبر
The waves of war, in a different form,
turn loves upside down.
مهر تلخان را به شیرین می کشدزانک اصل مهرها باشد رشد
Love draws the bitter ones toward the sweet,
for the root of loves is growth.
قهر شیرین را به تلخی می بردتلخ با شیرین کجا اندر خورد
Wrath leads the sweet into bitterness —
how should the bitter accord with the sweet?
تلخ و شیرین زین نظر ناید پدیداز دریچهٔ عاقبت دانند دید
Bitter and sweet cannot be seen from this vantage;
they are discerned through the window of the final outcome.
چشم آخربین تواند دید راستچشم آخربین غرورست و خطاست
The end-seeing eye can see aright;
the stable-gazing eye is vanity and error.
ای بسا شیرین که چون شکر بودلیک زهر اندر شکر مضمر بود
O, how many a sweet thing has been like sugar,
yet poison lay hidden within the sugar.
آنک زیرک تر، به بو بشناسدشو آن دگر چون بر لب و دندان زدش
The shrewder one recognizes it by smell;
another, when it reaches lips and teeth —
پس لبش ردش کند پیش از گلوگرچه نعره می زند شیطان کلوا
his lips reject it before the throat,
though Satan cries out: "Eat!"
و آن دگر را در گلو پیدا کندو آن دگر را در بدن رسوا کند
Another discovers it in the throat;
another, it exposes within the body.
وان دگر را در حدث سوزش دهدذوق آن زخم جگردوزش دهد
Another it burns at excretion,
giving the taste of that liver-piercing wound.
وان دگر را بعد ایام و شهوروان دگر را بعد مرگ از قعر گور
Another, after days and months;
another, after death, from the depths of the grave.
ور دهندش مهلت اندر قعر گورلابد آن پیدا شود یوم النشور
And if respite is granted within the depths of the grave,
it will inevitably appear on the Day of Resurrection.
هر نبات و شکری را در جهانمهلتی پیداست از دور زمان
Every herb and sugar in the world
has a manifest term through the course of time.
سالها باید که اندر آفتابلعل یابد رنگ و رخشانی و تاب
Years are needed under the sun
for the ruby to gain color, radiance, and luster.
باز تره در دو ماه اندر رسدباز تا سالی گل احمر رسد
The leek, meanwhile, ripens in two months;
and the red rose comes within a year.
بهر این فرمود حق عز و جلسورة الانعام در ذکر اجل
For this reason God, Mighty and Majestic, spoke
in Sūrat al-An'ām regarding the appointed term.
این شنیدی مو بمویت گوش بادآب حیوانست خوردی نوش باد
You have heard this — may every hair of you become an ear.
It is the Water of Life; you have drunk it — may it be wholesome.
آب حیوان خوان مخوان این را سخنروح نو بین در تن حرف کهن
Call it the Water of Life; do not call it mere speech;
see a new spirit in the body of old letters.
نکتهٔ دیگر تو بشنو ای رفیقهمچو جان او سخت پیدا و دقیق
Hear another subtlety, O companion —
like the soul, it is both quite manifest and refined.
در مقامی هست هم این زهر ماراز تصاریف خدایی خوش گوار
In one station, even this serpent's venom,
through divine dispensations, is pleasant.
در مقامی زهر و در جایی دوادر مقامی کفر و در جایی روا
In one station, poison; in another, medicine;
in one station, unbelief; in another, permissible.
گرچه آنجا او گزند جان بودچون بدینجا در رسد درمان بود
Though there it was harm to the soul,
when it arrives here it becomes a cure.
آب در غوره ترش باشد ولیکچون به انگوری رسد شیرین و نیک
Water in the unripe grape is sour, but
when it reaches the ripe grape, it is sweet and good.
باز در خم او شود تلخ و حرامدر مقام سرکگی نعم الادام
Again in the vat it becomes bitter and forbidden;
in the station of vinegar — "What an excellent condiment!"
