Text and Translation

A kind friend came from distant lands
and became the guest of Joseph the Truthful.
They had been acquainted in childhood,
reclining on the cushion of old familiarity.
He reminded him of the brothers' cruelty and envy;
Joseph said: "That was a chain, and I was a lion."
The lion has no shame from a chain —
we have no complaint against God's decree.
If the lion has a chain around his neck,
he is still lord over all the chain-makers.
He asked: "How were you in the prison and the pit?"
He said: "Like the moon in conjunction and in waning."
If in conjunction the new moon bends double,
does it not become the full moon in the sky at last?
Though the pearl was pounded in the mortar,
it became the light of eye and heart and sees on high.
A grain of wheat was cast beneath the earth —
then from that earth, ears of grain were raised.
Again it was pounded in the mill —
its value increased and it became bread, life-giving.
Again the bread was pounded under the teeth —
it became intellect and soul and keen understanding.
And when that soul was annihilated in love —
"it amazes the sowers" came after the sowing.
This speech has no end — return,
to see what the good man said to Joseph.
After telling his story, Joseph said: "O such a one,
come now, what have you brought us as a gift?
To come empty-handed to the door of friends
is like going to the mill without wheat.
God Most High will say to His creation at the Resurrection:
'Where is the gift for the Day of Gathering?'
'You have come to Us alone and penniless,
just as We created you — even so.'
'Come, what have you brought as a means of approach,
as a gift for the Day of Resurrection?
Or did you have no hope of return?
Did the promise of this day seem false to you?'"
If you deny His hospitality out of foolishness,
you carry away from the kitchen only dust and ash.
But if you do not deny it, why do you step
at the door of that Friend with such empty hands?
Save a little from sleep and eating;
carry a gift for the meeting with Him.
Become "few in sleep" of those who lie slumbering;
be in the pre-dawn hours among those who seek forgiveness.
Stir a little, like the embryo,
so that you may be granted senses that see by light.
And when you depart from the world as from a womb,
you will pass from earth into a vast expanse.
That which is called "God's earth is vast" —
know it as a field most lofty for the prophets.
The heart is not constricted in that wide expanse;
the fresh palm tree there will not have dry branches.
Now you are the bearer of your senses —
you grow slow and weary and fall headlong.
When you are carried, not the carrier, in sleep,
weariness departs and you are free of toil and pain.
Know the state of sleep as a foretaste
of the carried state of the saints.
The saints are the Companions of the Cave, O stubborn one —
in their waking and their turning, they are still asleep.
He draws them effortlessly into action,
unaware: to the right side, to the left side.
What is that "right side"? The beautiful act.
What is that "left side"? The occupations of the body.
Both these works proceed from the prophets —
they are unaware of both, like an echo.
If the echo makes you hear good and evil,
the Essence is unaware of both.
