دفتر اول - بخش ۱۵۹ - متهم کردن غلامان و خواجه‌تاشان مر لقمان را کی آن میوه‌های ترونده را که می‌آوردیم او خورده است / Book One - Section 159 - The slaves and fellow servants accusing Luqman that he has eaten the fresh fruits which we were bringing

Original content

English translation

Luqman was before his own master, lowly in body among his servants. He would send the slaves to the garden so that fruit might come to him for his ease. Luqman among the slaves was like a hanger-on, full of meanings, dark-faced like night. Those slaves ate the collected fruits gladly, under the goad of greed. They told the master: 'Luqman ate them.' The master became sour and stern toward Luqman. When Luqman investigated the cause, he opened his lips under his master's reproach. Luqman said: 'My lord, before God a treacherous servant is not approved. Test all of us, generous one; fill us with boiling water. After that, drive us into a broad plain: you mounted, we running on foot. Then look at the evildoer and at the workings of the Unveiler of Secrets.' The master became cupbearer with boiling water to the slaves, and they drank it from fear. After that he drove them through the plains; that company ran high and low. From distress they began vomiting; the water brought the fruits out of them. When vomiting came to Luqman from deep in the belly, clear water rose from within him. If Luqman's wisdom showed this, what then must be the wisdom of the Lord of Being? On the day when all secrets are tested, what lies hidden in you appears, though it is not desired. When they were made to drink boiling water, all the curtains were cut away by what was exposed. Fire became the punishment of the unbelievers because fire is the test of stone. To that stone-like heart, how many times did We speak gently, yet it accepted no counsel. Bad medicine found the vein of a bad wound; for a donkey's head, the point of a dog's tooth. 'The vile are for the vile' is wisdom; the ugly too is paired with the ugly and suited to it. So go toward whatever companion you desire; become effaced in it, of its shape and qualities. If you desire light, make yourself ready for light; if you desire distance, be self-regarding and become distant. And if you desire a road out of this ruined prison, do not pull your head away from the Friend: 'prostrate and draw near.'
