In Section 145 of Jami's Subhat al-Abrar (from the Haft Awrang), the poet expounds on vigilance and sleeplessness (sahr) as the fourth pillar of saintship (wilayah) and the spiritual station of the Abdal. Jami metaphorically describes sleep as a form of death and wakefulness as true life, warning that sleep acts as a thief that steals half of a seeker's precious life. To counter this, he advises seekers of the divine path to 'steal' hours from the night through voluntary wakefulness and spiritual devotion, thereby lengthening their spiritual 'day' and safeguarding their lifetime from negligence.
