The Theme of Wealth Sacrifice and Spiritual Poverty in Attar's Praise of Abu Bakr in Asrar Nameh

In the third discourse of Asrar Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar highlights the concept of spiritual poverty and complete surrender of worldly wealth through the figure of Abu Bakr. Attar recounts how Abu Bakr, upon hearing the divine call, sacrificed all his gold and silver, choosing instead to clothe himself in a simple woolen garment (gelim). This act of self-divestment (pak-bazi) is presented as the ultimate prerequisite for true spiritual vision and companionship with the Prophet, embodying the Sufi ideal of choosing poverty over worldly riches.
